I've noticed a couple of people in the community who keep trying to buy up rare old decks (Lotrek/S17 in particular) in private sales only to try to flip them shortly after. For example, these same people keep asking me for a blue Damask, when I know they not only have their own but are also known for flipping such decks at outrageous prices. It leaves a really sour taste in my mouth and I'm trying not to get upset by it. Maybe it's because I spent countless time, effort, and money to procure really rare decks from some great people in the collecting sphere, and these bad apples make it harder for those like me to have access to such rarities because they have the capital to hoard them and keep them behind a paywall.

How do others deal with such people? I'm seeking some advice, support, conversation.

I think it comes down to the honesty aspect - if they are misleading people into thinking they are a collector trying to add a gem to a collection when they are really a poacher I would call them out on it - but in the end if they are determined… poachers gonna poach

Ignore private sales. I got these two Italian dudes messaging me on Instagram all the time to buy my rare decks when I am not even selling them. And their profile got like 4 of each of the rare deck they are asking to buy. I just ignore them. Nothing else you can do I guess. If you wanna sell them, do ebay so the market can decide the price and you don't get lowballed in a private sale.

One of those guys contacted me out of the blue offering me a Delirium Signature for ~£ 1000. It was just after I'd commented on someone else's post about theirs.

I politely declined.

The only interesting question is, if they tell Gio and Lorenzo straight away that they only want their stuff signed to flip it or if they are kissing their asses and pretend to be fans?

As for how to deal with them; just like you do with all annoying folks - ignore them or politely tell them to f**k off.

This one is asking for more than 10x the current price and the producer is still selling them at $12 on his store, with over 600 decks left in stock! And he can't even be bothered to give free shipping!

This is just too odd. 34 auctions for $20 bike singles of no special merit…

IMG_6914.jpeg

Might just be a full moon, also spotted this oddity hanging out in the playing card section - to make it fun I will put up the auction in question and one that is not odd, so you can see if you can spot the odd one…

I was wondering if it was just me and perhaps I had a gas leak…

But I think the “harts” is correct, as these appear to be some unknown rare variant of standard hearts. the difference in the clubs I have yet to spot…

Bought the dog with the melon hat - pricey but I figure a nice showpiece.

Seeing this made me go search for some Jocu decks on eBay, which I never do.

Such a joke. There's some guy selling Under the Moon set + triptych, which has literally just come out, for $300 when it's clearly available on our site for just over half that. So many standard decks with markup.

What's the point? It takes a second to google these decks and see they're in stock everywhere, it came out a month or so ago! Rare decks I can get it, but who's trying to flip standard releases or stuff that's still available at retail?

Welcome to the madness, which is eBay. That said, it is a market where you can often/sometimes/occasionally/rarely find a tough deck. It might cost a ton, but not always. It is a wild and exciting place to be sure.

Like many here, I was quite active on eBay and soon had to navigate it. I think this is a great thread to help educate those new to playing card collecting to warn them of some of the more obvious and funny scams. Learning while laughing is great. But, there is a serious side to it.

Honestly, I have very little regrets of my eBay purchases, and a whole lot of smiles and grins. If you are careful and mindful, eBay can be a great experience in your collecting experience. :D

They're meant to either invite a best offer or to prey on unsuspecting/new collectors. I've certainly fallen into this trap a few times before.

I have contacted a few, every now and then someone was actually mistaken but for the most part they say they are creating the listing in advance in anticipation of the day when they are not available. I don’t know if I believe them, but I have heard it a lot.

Angler mentality. They just put out the bait and paitiently wait for the dumbest or most hungry fish in the pond.
You would be surprised how much folks just roam one marketplace and don't bother to check other places.
Rumor has it that folks buy e.g. Lego sets for full retail.
You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that’s being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world.

You sometimes wonder whether they even have the deck in stock. They know they can acquire it at half the price and so only get it in when you offer to pay them twice the price.
