Re: [GandalfPC] My Collection
I like that I can zoom in and there's a lot of detail intact. With a picture like that, you need a small aperture so that more is in focus. That requires more lighting so that there isn't too much noise introduced.
This picture is incredibly promising!

Re: [GandalfPC] My Collection
Checking out the macro setting this morning - this is from a close up of two comparison shots of a Chopper figure - will play some this afternoon and try to hone everything in…
Still not sure how much might have been just a focus issue, but today will tell the tale…. It does look like the standard shot might have focused more on the hat brim…
Standard:
Macro on:

What I’m seeing is that I can get good results without macro, but that I need a bit steadier of a setup to go for extra long exposures without getting a bit of blur - so, time to put the practicing down and get some card pics up…

Re: [GandalfPC] My Collection
Managed to squeeze out a long exposure shot before the battery died - have a lot more playing to do…

Re: [GandalfPC] My Collection
Here we have small aperture longer exposure, which unfortunately caused a persistent spot near the bottom of the images from some dust on the sensor - I’ll get that out of the way for the next round….
Seems to me the Diamond suit above came out better using whatever settings it was using - I’ll check and go back to those settings I think…
Will reshoot with those settings and repost the spades…

Much better…. Using the settings above, all of these are with the light box on dimmest setting

Is it for better quality that you are preferring a camera over a scanner?

Re: [GandalfPC] My Collection
Yes, excellent for your 3d shots like the Thornwood tuck. I have an old FujiHS10 that has a macro mode, I might have to find it and my tripod and give it a try

Re: [GandalfPC] My Collection
Seems the light box was a step or two above minimum for last nights spades, now set properly down to the lowest setting the shutter speed has upped to 1/5th of a second.
Question is, do they want to be a notch brighter (touch longer shutter)?
I think they do - not bad enough to reshoot the suit - but tomorrow I’ll up the shutter a bit and brighten them up for the clubs…
reposting the hearts below with iPad photo adjustment of +36 to exposure to brighten up this set. Leaving the Ace above for reference

That +36 makes them look brilliant

Re: [GandalfPC] My Collection
Upped the shutter to 1/3 of a second - seems to be the sweet spot in conjunction with light box on dimmest setting and should serve as my goto for card shots.
The backs of these cards are jet black and mirror glossy, camera couldn’t even focus on it - as you can now picture it better than the camera, the rest of the faces…

Re: [GandalfPC] My Collection
And a bonus - some Karl Gerich - just plucked off the top cards, no need to hunt for winners in this deck.
Posting these as Kevork has the same deck on the way and am looking forward to coloring comparison - but I want to leave Kevork some room to be the first to post the rest of the deck before I return to it…
I was happy to find the same camera settings did these amazing justice - I found this a pretty hard deck to photograph previously…

Re: [GandalfPC] My Collection
Nearest I can tell there were at least three printings, first in 94, a dark red box in 98 (13 in that edition) and this one in 99 - believe there are 16 of this version
Karl did this from time to time, printing some decks in small editions over the years

Re: [GandalfPC] My Collection
Alarm woke me at 5:30am, auction was one of those where 5 minutes get added if a bit comes in the last minute - went on for an hour, but this puppy has been procured - pre-war deck that belongs in a museum, but will have to be satisfied with bunking with me for a while…
Oishi Tengudo, pre-war
Haven’t found an exact match, but it is in the same style as this early Showa period nintendo deck:
Judging from the close match of the rain man I imagine both are copying an earlier deck
I see this style rain man used in mid-meiji period (October 23, 1868 to July 30, 1912)
