Grettings from the swamp

Unread post by Brian »

Hey all. Long time collector and thought I'd finally join here. By way of introduction, I thought I'd share my earliest playing card memory. The tl;dr version is this: Hi, I'm Brian and my grandma taught me how to shuffle when I was 8. I've loved cards ever since.

So back in the summer that I was 8 years old, that would be 1987, and in order to surprise my grandparents for their anniversary, my father and his siblings got together to rent a house on Cape Cod for a week. It was cool, same ocean but different huge beaches, different woods, all that. Now grandma loved card games. She powdered her cards and won more often than not at her weekly bridge/pinochle/gin/poker game. I don't know but always imagined that she was a sharp :D One day it rained and Grandma wanted to play cards. I was the only taker.

That day she taught me how to play gin and even allowed me to win. And then she taught me how to riffle shuffle. Heh and then she showed me how to keep an ace on the bottom. And at the end of the trip, she gave me the deck. It was just a cancelled casino deck but I thought it was the coolest deck in the world with that hole in it and that Bee card back that was so unlike the only decks I'd seen up to that point in my life. I practiced and played with that deck until it was dirty and dog eared and wouldn't do anything but stick together in 6 or so clumpy packets. I still wonder how and when I lost it.

Anyway, I've been acquiring cards ever since, more seriously in the last 6 or 8 years, and have what I would call a medium sized (small to some here, no doubt) collection, which is to say that most people that have seen it in real life seem to think I'm a little crazy. I collect Bicycle brand and whatever else catches my eye when I am looking and have the extra funds. I also occasionally visit local thrift stores looking for old decks. Found some interesting things that way, but not yet any historical scores like I'm hoping for.
So that's my story. Glad to be here!

Hi Brain,

welcome to UC! I too started in card collecting through gameplay and, being that Bicycle were the first decks I ever really got my hands on, I sorta have a bit of a soft spot for the brand lol.

Nowadays though, I really only collect fully custom bikes and only wish there were more awesome ones to come out rather than the plethora of standard recolors of generic, uninspired themes constantly being cranked out by CPC and the like lol.

Do you have any one particular favorite bike deck in your collection? And, having started with an old casino deck, do you also collect casino decks? or maybe even those that draw inspiration from classic casino-style designs? With the recent KS of the reprint of JN and the popularity of the Cherries, the interest in such casino/casino-inspired decks have been reignited with the trend these days which is pretty cool too.

Anyways, glad to have you join and hope to see ya around!

Welcome to UC!

I remember being amazed by the used casino decks as well. The hole in the middle and the cut corners fascinated me. I hope you find it comfy around these parts - I certainly have!

Thanks for the welcome, everyone! You're right rousselle, my grandma was awesome. BaconWise, I thought that hole made them super special. Eventually I had a little laugh at my own expense when I finally learned what that was about.

I'm a little confused, I had made a pretty long post responding to PipChick that doesn't seem to have gone through. I probably just forget to hit submit  , but my apologies if this somehow ends up being a slightly more concise repeat.

PipChick, I know exactly what you mean about the recolors and uninspired themes. For the most part I've stopped buying them as well, but if the price is right I admittedly (as my portfolio52 page will attest) will buy just about any deck regardless of collectibility. Or even usability for that matter.

It's difficult for me to choose favorite deck designs, but right now...and even though it is a little disappointing that not all the cards are custom/transformation... the Astronaut Snoopy deck that I got today is probably one of my current favorite Bicycle branded. It's much easier for me to choose favorite user decks, the bicycle gold seals and Erdnase 216 repros from CARC. With the crushed Bee stock and traditional cut, I suspect I'll be adding the JNs to that list as well. I already wish I had pledged for more of those.

I have some casino decks in my accumulation, although nothing really noteworthy yet. There are a whole lot of vintage decks, including some of the more sought after casino decks, that I some day hope to own but have none of them yet.

Thanks again for the welcome!
