Came across these on the hanafuda reddit - contacted them via instagram and found they are still available - shipping will be delayed a month or two as they are in Ukraine - if you are interested in getting some send them a message via instagram:

Cameron Ayn Carlson had posted a pic of a set of hanafuda cards that someone made her as a gift from her art - I asked if she might consider producing them for sale:

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Two more decks have arrived since yesterday - Hanafuda Hawaii style and the Interlude Hanafuda deck - shown here both to wet whistles as well as to show the size of the interlude cards, which are smaller than I thought - and that pleases me no end.
The interlude box is so well crafted, with magnetic lid, super thick and sturdy, silver foiled, bold inner red lining - I decided to wait a few hours before even peeking at the cards to prepare myself for the spectacle

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Interlude Hanafuda
The cards have a nice velvet feel, as does the box - cards once stacked show a slightly uneven cut, and I imagine its hand done - square corners might have been nice with a touch of rounding and card stock could have been a touch thicker, but all in all it feels like nit picking rather than a serious complaint - had those things been different I might have gotten another three decks, as is though I can’t imagine not having at least one of them.
I’m actually a bit tempted to get a second deck, just so I can allow myself to hit the corners of one of them with a corner nipper for more comfortable (and longer lasting) use - and if you know me at all, I think that means I will have that second deck on order about 2 minutes after typing this sentence…. (Update: 2min later - yup - second deck ordered, corner nipping underway, pic of nipper added)
Arranged by months:
Brights:
Tens:
Ribbons:
Instructions on one side, card reference on the other:
Nipper and one card nipped:
Few minutes later, deck fully nipped - improvement incalculable - totally worth it…

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Hanafuda Hawaii Style
Very nice deck, sticking close to the traditional art with nice touches
The points and other markings may imply its a beginner deck - which it may be - but probably not the best for that use, as the score markings do seem to deviate from the norm a bit, the ribbons are 10 and Tens are 5 here, Rain Man doesn’t seem marked as a bright - this is likely due to difference in Hawaiian scoring - too busy taking pictures to know for sure, but I’ll get around to digging in to the why’s later

Nice set from 2015, nice blast from the past overall - my son and I played these games so much we should be getting a share of the royalties

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Purple Manten Hanafuda or so its called on Amazon Japan
Tamura Shōgundō’s Shishinden Hanafuda as it is properly known.
Tamura Shōgundō is a small manufacturer, founded in 1921.
紫宸殿 (Shishinden, the ceremonial hall of Kyōto Imperial Palace)
This is a high quality set - as one can generally assume from a wood boxed set. “Premium Hone-dyed Karuta, hand dyed by artisans” not quite on Oishi Tengudo’s level, but a small bend in them, hand wrapped and nothing to shake a stick at.

Minions Hanafuda by Beverly
These hanger box sets are always machine printed and cut cardboard, unwrapped backs, but decent quality - cheap as all get out when bought from Amazon Japan (about $12.50) - worth every penny and more
The art on these certainly puts them high on my list - c’mon - its minions

I also found out the other day that the extra ribbon card some decks include is labeled “Sample” and is provided so you can examine the quality before opening the sealed deck

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
I see zenplus.jp mentioned there as an established service - so I feel safe enough to say that is the shopping service I am in process of using (will be a while before my first shipment arrives from them). Don’t want to give them my personal thumbs up until everything arrives, but for the bold, it does appear quite legit.
I used them to grab all the Tengudo I couldn’t find elsewhere (I have heard they do ship to the US, but I was unable to manage it, and my emails to Tengudo went unanswered)
Just used them earlier today to grab a deck off Amazon Japan, which ships most items to the USA, but not all. The deck in question was this one, which is made by Tamura Shōgundō - an edition using especially bright colors and having its own uniqueness - after unboxing another deck by them there was no doubt in my mind that it must be had. Approx $35, exactly a bargain. Sellers on eBay tend to look for around $100 - as they do for all the nifty hanafuda you can get for 1/3 of that in Japan.

That Minion's set is awesome! Love how it references all the movies without sacrificing basic hanafuda design. Clever!

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Just picked up an old set off eBay, missing a single card (don’t know which one yet) - same set as my prior incomplete deck purchase from eBay - so with any luck, I now have a complete set - fingers crossed…
A few more of todays ebay finds on the way, one is the Hanapua Hanafuda which I have been seeking for a while, the others are fusion/poker style decks

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Just scored this deck
The characters on the card do seem to indicate they are correct for the wrapper - as I only find the second character associated with this manufacturer…
Manufacturer: Nihon Karuta Seizō (日本骨牌製造)
万両 (manryū, ‘10 000 coins’), trademarked by NK in 1919
The card with text on it I have only partially translated - last two characters say “paper-mache” and at least from the pictures it appears they made be made differently from others I have (rather than being wrapped it appears the red border and edges are homogenous with the card itself)

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Do you mean this?
The text is "別製張貫" - Google and some translating suggests it means roughly "made with a special manufacturing technique" but my Japanese is verrrry rusty

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
That’s the text. Think you are right - friends wife did say the first two characters were “specially made” - so I guess thats it.
Special manufacture / Paper mache - might be as close as we get
Here are the nintendos I spotted with same characters:
Style of the characters is different - so perhaps its a generic phrase that was often used

Got a tracking number from the Korean shopping service - the Tuhwa Hwatu v3 deck are on they way. Decks have also started arriving at the shopping service in Japan (nearly all the decks in now) - have a few more to arrive there before I have them pack them up for forwarding on.
So far, so good.

Nice quality, not handmade, but not hanger box cardboard either, believe they are vinyl acetate - nice and clacky

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Very exciting morning - finally tracked down a Matsui Tengudo deck that I have been in search of since day one - found on Japanese site at about half the US cost…
鳳凰 (hōō, the Japanese phoenix)
Did some research and found this deck in the Japanese Playing Card Musesum
https://japanplayingcardmuseum.com/edo- ... -hanafuda/
Listed there as: Matsui Tengudo (Yahachi Hanafuda prototype with waka poems and fireflies) - at least thats how google is translating: 松井天狗堂(和歌入り、ホタル入り八八花札試作品)
Link to the image pdf at the museum is at bottom of this post
Figure fireflies means the silver. Not sure if this means that mine is a “prototype” or not, but it does seem to match - might be that the translation of “prototype” is wrong
There are various iterations of this deck there, using similar art, some have silver, one has waka poems - not sure if all production decks are the same (with waka) - trying to do more research but not learning much…
Going to be a long nervous wait until it gets here…
Here is the link to the full sized image on the museums site - as these are hand colored there are small variations to be seen from my deck above, but the woodblock printing is identical:

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Shikishima Hanafuda
The cards are low quality compared even to the hanger boxes, but the art is high quality and quite unique - which is what made me get them even knowing the cards themselves wouldn’t be up to much play wear - about $15 from Amazon Japan
Silvery swirls over the card indicate the Brights, horizontal stripes are the Tens, vertical are the banners - a nice touch that harkens back to some of the older decks.
These are larger than standard hanafuda, here is a comparison of them in between a standard poker and hanafuda sizes:

Flower Battle hanafuda
A poker sized deck, made for beginners and kids of all ages. Decent card stock, should handle plenty of play
Colored borders to help identify months
Extra cards:
Here are the Brights (top row, with gold coins identifying them) and the Tens (with checkerboard boarders) grouped up:

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Todays arrivals - all from ebay
Cards laid out are from Nintendo President Hanafuda - previously misidentified as Marufuku Sakura Handafuda - the first deck I received from ebay was in the Marufuku box, but further study shows the box was mismatched - nice to have the box, but now I need the deck
As this is the President and not Marufuku - lot of work to make a deck I already have several of Live and learn - and learning can come slow when dealing with identifying hanafuda decks…
Off on the left we have two other decks, the Nippon being the small one, Kintengu Hawaiian Hanafuda poker size being the other. Very happy that the Nippon deck is small format (had no idea)
