Blade Runner 2049

Unread post by Bruno »

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe .....
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion .... I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate .... All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die ...."

Does anybody have info on this new Ridley Scott ?

The original is in my top 5 all time favorites.
The initial reactions give me hope that it will be as good as the orig.

BR2049 is directed by Denis Villeneuve, who also brought "The Arrival" to theaters recently, and HOLY COW does this guy understand how science fiction works. (I've read the short story that The Arrival is based upon, and Villeneuve *gets it*.)

So, yeah. I'm optimistic that the sequel to Blade Runner is going to be worthwhile.

It is looong. So sit near an aisle or cut back on the coffee beforehand lol

I thoroughly enjoyed it - the visuals and sound are totally on point. The story is not overly complicated and pretty satisfying.
The introspective pace of the original is true here too (and Arrival really). I liked the pacing, but if you prefer a snappier beat be prepared for something a little more ponderous.

But it is something you HAVE to experience at the cinema, Imax if you can. 3D unessential.

The atmosphere, world-building and sheer spectacle are worth the ticket price many times over.

I'd recommend watching these too:

Onehundredandsixtythreeminuteslooong ....
163 minutes blade running time.
Does water still run clean from the tap in 2048, do pay phones exist, are these inclusions to palliate or highlight the enormous perversity of that future world ?
Yeh/Nah .... ?
The story is the story .... ?
The statement is the story ?
The backstory is the statement ?
The show is .... just the show ?
Not to criticise, just to get some feel for how this is portrayed and (re)presented as a possible future reality .... ?
The reality that we make possible today ?
I guess I shall discover for myself Joe, when I see it on the big screen this arvo.
Just ordered Arrival .... Assassins Creed .... and Trainspotting 2, tzzzz.

Actually the water issue is addressed lol

Arrival is very good. Not seen T2 buy would like to. Assassins Creed is not great - action is good but you saw all of it in the trailer...

Re Bladerunner 2049 - honest you could go just for the experience. You could go for the underlying commentary on existentialism, slavery or abortion. You could go for the noirish detective yarn.
If you can appreciate all of the above then you'll enjoy it all the more!

Saw it last night on IMAX, good movie. Not as good as the original but good nonetheless. The visuals were absolutely amazing.

My only complaint about it would be the score was overbearing and just wrong for the mood at times. I don't know if it was just the IMAX system I saw it on or what but in scenes like the fight in the water it just was to loud, somber and brought me out of the moment. It didn't fit the mood of the moment at all.

But it was a good movie that left you pondering things afterwards and deserves a second viewing. Just don't expect any "...tears in the rain..." type of poetic moments.

Honestly I thought that it would have been nice to have its own "Tears in the rain" moment - but they couldn't force it or it would have been obvious and jarring.

The original was organic, some parts scripted, some changed and ad libbed in the moment. As much as I like Ryan Gosling, I just don't think he has the imagination...

You could imagine a monologue though... (I'm no screenwriter but here's how I'd imagine it could have gone...)

- K sits on the steps, blood staining the snow. He watches a single perfect snowflake slowly melt into the crimson pool.
- "People like me are just a crystal in a blizzard. All the same, a drone in the swarm. When we are gone we never were"
- [Super close up of the flake still half formed - perfect white against red, slowly dispersing.] "But if you care to look you know differently."
- "I remember hiding a wooden horse. I remember fighting. I remember green eyes and smoke. Who's to tell be what is real? I know what's real" {echoing Deckard}
- As the flake disappears completely he falls silent. Deckard picks up the small carved horse that falls from his fingers, squeezes his shoulder and walks into the facility.

For a super duper call back - when the horse falls into the snow the blood soaks into the white, surrounding the horse until just a sliver of white remains extending from the horses head, horn-like. This too vanishes as fresh flakes start to cover the area and Deckard picks it up.

Probably a bit too unsubtle for the tone of the movie though ;)

Crikey.
Nice try there Joe.
Ryans K, had he been un-enhanced would have died in the first scene with Dave Batista punching him through that wall.
Would have died 3 times over .... (angry Dave, oh-oh ....)
No need for more blood, I suspect ....
That final scene has it for passing and renewal .... but to me says more about the manufacture of thought and therefore the perception of reality to people, replicant or not .... the Big Lie.
Any sort of manufactured reality as memory in essence is a falsity, an instability, and a dangerously fatal progression for humanity.
Dr. Skelline lived a lie (it being unclear to me whether her survival/defense was manufactured or because replicant/human immune system defect?) and at great profit manufactured lies as memory .... and Fords Deckard is thinking .... "what have I begotten ?"
Least, he flaming well should be ....
As usual, the end is the beginning.
(So long as [real] life continues .... )
Thought the soundtrack effective, and the spectacle overall faithfull to the orig.
Rutger Hauer, so definitely a one-off ....
Interested to watch 'em back to back.

You're right about Bautista lol - though it was implied in a throwaway line that he let him win in an attempt to preserve the secret.

To the solipsist all of your reality is constructed by you, or rather, since your perceived reality is indistinguishable from a sufficiently good simulation it wouldn't matter if it was since it's the only reality you have.

We could be in the matrix, be cylons, or created by God 5 minutes ago and we couldn't know differently. Would you want to know? Would it make a difference? Perhaps that's fatalistic..?

The notion of choosing the reality that suits you best is not new in film - Leo DeCaprio has done it at least twice with Shutter Island and Inception...

Rachel (and Decker should you choose to believe) being able to reproduce was implied to be by design. Dr Wallace (as he slaughtered the new but imperfect replicant) seemed to say that Tyrell had found the secret and created Rachel as a prototype, then took the secret to his grave, and all other records destroyed in the blackout.

I don't think Deckard is channelling Oppenheimer quite yet...

Don't bring my reality into question Joe. :D
I speak of the manipulation of peoples memories as conceptualised in BR.
And consequently, peoples beliefs/perceptions .... their entire understanding deleted, reformed, little by little, incrementally, en masse.
That, Manipulation as Industry, is what I question.
Industrialised Betrayal of Humanity.
You know there are those who will always want to.
We can open a thread, maybe ?
Yes, you may choose your truth.
But it is stupidity to kid yourself, short term or long.
