FACTIONS Relaunch -- UPDATED COSTS + POLL
Looking forward to a relaunch of FACTIONS, I have been thinking of offering a standard suit version of the deck to bring in more backers to the project (still capturing the original look and theme).
Below are some images showing what the new cards would look like. (I included small versions of the custom suit cards for comparison)
Cards would be manufactured by MPC.
(unfunded campaign in case you didn't see it: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/11 ... -card-deck)
Your thoughts / comments / etc. would be much appreciated!

Re: FACTIONS Relaunch -- now with standard suits!
I don't think the standard suits detract at all from your theme. In fact, I find them comforting.
I would caution against using MPC. For some, like myself, it is a deal breaker. Others don't care so much. There is definitely more concern over the quality of MPC than there is regarding USPCC, LPCC or EPCC.

I know MPC isn't an "industry standard" / top of line, though with what seems will be likely be a low quantity of decks (~300 with current KS backer numbers) there's no way I can go with USPCC. Legends hasn't responded to my quote request emails. I'll check out EPCC.flashcards wrote:I don't think the standard suits detract at all from your theme. In fact, I find them comforting.

Are there horror stories out there using MPC? Seems like they are committed to quality. I would be using the 2nd best paper type (310gsm French casino quality card stock with black core (linen finish)).

No, there are no horror stories. If you really only want to print much less than 1000 (which is EPCC/LPCC's minimum), then MPC is your best and only option. MPC is good, the "big three" are great, that's all.
I think flashcards merely phrased his comment somewhat misleading, people simply would rather have a deck be of USPCC/LPCC/EPCC quality than MPC quality. Thus, you may lose some backers. This is possibly offset by not needing to raise as much money for a smaller print run.
As has been stated before, if you want to see your deck get printed or for whatever reason need it to be very limited in print - so much so that you are willing to have them be of less quality (not "bad", just not as good as they could be); then you print with MPC.

Re: FACTIONS Relaunch -- UPDATED COSTS + POLL
UPDATE!!
I've crunched numbers using MPC and I will be able to cut the goal for the KS in half of the original ($12,000 down to $6,000). Another positive is International shipping is a bit lower! I will be charging shipping up front since many people expressed their dislike of shipping being charged after the Kickstarter ended.
One Deck: $12 (plus Shipping: US - $3 / Rest of the World - $10)
Two Decks: $22 (plus Shipping: US - $4 / Rest of the World - $13)
One Deck + Art book: $40 (plus Shipping: US - $8 / Canada - $24 / Rest of the World - $34)
Half Brick (6 Decks): $60 (plus Shipping: US - $15 / Rest of the World - $28)
One Brick (12 Decks): $110 (plus Shipping: US - $15 / Rest of the World - $32)
As mentioned, I have also thought about offering a "standard suit" version of the deck. Samples are above. This would only be possible/cost effective if ~100 people would purchase the standard suit version, so please answer the poll!
A. I plan to back the Custom Suit version ONLY (1 deck USA total = $15 / RoW total = $22)
B. I plan to back the Standard Suit version ONLY (1 deck USA total = $15 / RoW total = $22)
C. I plan to back both the Custom AND Standard Suit versions (2 decks USA total = $26 / RoW total = $35)
D. I won’t be backing FACTIONS
Your thoughts / comments / etc. would be much appreciated!

I think the standard suits look great, there's definitely no worry about will there be confusion in using the deck. I'm interested to hear how others feel about this!

Re: FACTIONS Relaunch -- UPDATED COSTS + POLL
I'm not sure if I'll be backing Factions. There are a lot of decks coming this week I'm planning on pledging/buying. If I did though it'd be for both decks.
Move on, nothing to see here.

Wow, 15 for an MPC deck delivered...easy PASS...it is a shame as I really like the artwork and backed the original project and think the standard suits are an improvement
A deck a day helps keep the addiction at bay!

Re: FACTIONS Relaunch -- UPDATED COSTS + POLL
I too backed the original and will not be backing the relaunch based on the choice of MPC. Its unfortunate but obviously I understand the need to go with MPC seeing as it didnt fund with USPCC.

Stinks to hear this. With all the number crunching I've done I don't know how anyone that does low-run card deck KS projects with a few thousand dollar goal aren't losing quite a bit of money. With the new numbers through MPC, margin is barely in the green -- and that's if everything goes flawlessly.JuFiN wrote:I too backed the original and will not be backing the relaunch based on the choice of MPC. I'd love anyone's advice on moving forward -- though I guess it could come down to maybe people just aren't interested in FACTIONS??

Re: FACTIONS Relaunch -- UPDATED COSTS + POLL
I think the art in this deck is good, and the standard pips adds a lot.
However this situation is more of a business case than a playing cards problem.
Some projects fail because the design is weak or unattractive and others for a lack of marketing and reach. This deck would fund if you could promote it enough. Some may argue this applies to any deck, but Factions has a theme appealing to many groups, not only card collectors.
Bottom line, get a partner. I've considered releasing a deck myself but I should hire a designer, but I am good at marketing. You have the opposite situation. Look for a company to share cost, promotion and profit and you might find your project funded.
