What makes you back a deck (Kickstarter) or buy a deck?
For me, in general, I go for a modern look like Bicycle's Oblivion or Omnia Deck by Thirdway. I'm not too much into the gothic designs I see prevail in card designs. However, a deck with alot of customer art does get more than one or two looks from me. So what about you?

Custom, creative courts mostly. Even if the backs, jokers or aces are weak, more than often the courts will make the difference between buying or not. Specially the queens. I've grown weary of historical decks, recolored/slightly modified standard courts. So I typically look for something out of the ordinary.

I buy what I like, pretty much. I thought everyone did at this point.

Everybody buys what they like but what makes you like a deck? Everyone doesn't share the same tastes when it comes to designs.Mike Ratledge wrote:I buy what I like, pretty much. I thought everyone did at this point.

I favour classic designs. The Origins series or the Omnia. I don't go for the more 'modern' (in terms of styling) decks.
Gothic or death-themed decks hold no interest for me, neither do ones that look space-age or metallic.
Give me simple, traditional lines any day.

Re: What makes you back a deck (Kickstarter) or buy a deck?
My tastes in cards are much like my tastes in music, Which is to say all over the place. I love classic designs but equally love modern designs. I have a sweet spot for skulls and all things Gothic as well. For me the theme alone doesn't cut it, the art has to catch my eye. Quantifying taste is hard, if not impossible.
Like many of us who have discovered this hobby, I backed/bought everything I saw at first . Over time and many dollars I found I was buying decks I wasn't so crazy about for the sake of having them instead of the art.
In the end my barometer for backing is simple. If I like em I'll back em. That being said there are a handful of artists that I will back sight unseen. Lorenzo, Lotrek, Tomlinson, Davidson, Robinson and Edgerly to name a few. Not simply for their names but because they have yet to produce a deck I didn't want.
I hope this helps....

nECr0MaNCeD: I agree about some artists you would back sight unseen. Only been involved with one KickStarter, when I was lucky enough to back Lorenzo Gaggiotti's sumptuous Red Cats, and in Stockholm17's capable hands the project went as smooth as could be. Excellent customer service coupled with a truly, staggeringly beautiful deck of cards.
