Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
One of my first Kickstarter pledges came in today. The Tacoma deck. Just bought one for my collection. I know probably this deck had limited appeal but had to had one hehe. Since I live not too far from Tacoma I was invited to the launch party last friday but could not make it. So I had them mail it

You live near Tacoma? Heck, we're almost neighbors! (I live in Salem, OR)
a launch party for a card deck would have been fun!

Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
Scans of two recent additions to my collection:
==========[ RISQUE BEAUTIES ]==========
Bought this on eBay from seller DenverPete.
This is a modern, poker-sized reprint of a series of cards from (I believe) the 1880s.
I say "series of cards" rather than "deck of cards" because the original cards were purchased, one at a time, as inserts into packages of plug tobacco, and were collected, much like kids now buy packs of bubble gum to collect an entire set of baseball cards (do kids still do that?).
The originals are quite oversized (if memory serves, they are about five inches tall), and modern collectors can take many years purchasing the cards one or two at a time at conventions or online to complete the deck! I myself have probably six or seven of the original cards, and hope to upload images of some of them here when I can dig them oiut.
==========[ THE TAPE DECK ]==========
I purchased this one a couple of months ago at a Bed, Bath & Beyond store, of all places.
The deck is an interesting idea whi was not quite realized, I think.
The most clever part, not shown here, is the "box", a clear plastic hinged case, made to look like the clear plastic hinged cases which audio cassette tapes used to come in (may still do, for all I know).
With the deck inside, and the back (shown above, with "Mixed Deck" on it, it could easily be mistaken for an oversized cassette tape!
The designer(s) extended this "eighties music" theme by incorporating generic musical performers on the courts and jokers. A nice idea, but the artwork looks like it was hastily drawn by an amateur artist.
A nice idea though, and a fun conversation piece to add to my collection!
Here is a page with more images (including the case):
http://www.vat19.com/dvds/cassette-tape ... -cards.cfm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I can't quite make out what those Bikes are. Is that a clown on them?
Also, the eBay tags should go around just the item number, not the item's URL.
Here is the one you apparently were trying to show us:

Is that anything like "growing a pair"?runit wrote:Yeah finally won a pair.
I have very few Casino decks in my collection, because they generally do not have custom courts,which is my main focus.
Here are some exceptions: (from my old web site):
==========[ CASINO DECKS ]==========
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Exhibit
Card collecting, like many collections, can start almost by accident. You keep a memento of a trip - perhaps a matchbook, post card, coin, stamp or seashell. Later, you find and pick up another such item. Then another, and another. At some point you look around, and you've started a collection! It's a safe bet that many a playing-card collection started this way with casino cards - decks sold at gambling casinos as souvenirs, usually after they have been used in play at the casino.
In most casinos, a deck of playing cards is only used for a limited number of hands, presumably to reduce the possibility of cards being marked (bent, nicked, etc.) by crooked players. The deck is taken out of play, and a "fresh" deck unsealed.
The decks are then normally sold in the casino's souvenir shop. But to prevent someone from, say, taking the aces out of such a souvenir pack and bringing them back into play at the tables, the decks are disfigured in some way, such as having a hole drilled through them.
Some collectors focus entirely on casino decks. For them, the older decks, especially from now-defunct casinos, are highly desirable. Here in the Gallery however, the casino cards illustrated are mostly those with unusual jacks, queens and kings.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Cards on Display
The Queen of Hearts - From a deck purchased at Caesar's Palace Las Vegas, sold in souvenir shops but not used in play, so no disfiguring was done to it. I understand that other Caesar's casinos do use decks with these court cards.
The Jack of Clubs - From the Wild Wild West Casino at Bally's Park Place. The court cards show sepia-toned photographs of cowboys, saloon gals and sherrifs. Note the hole drilled through the center.
The King of Diamonds - From a Mohegan Sun Casino deck. Many other native American casinos are using decks with these and other, similarly-styled courts. Again, a hole has been drilled.
The Jack of Spades - From (could you guess?) the Flamingo Hilton in Las Vegas. Note the two clipped corners.
The Joker - From The Reserve Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The casino has an African wildlife theme, reflected in this deck's courts, which depict lions, giraffes and zebras in royal garb, this hyena joker and a second, baboon joker seen at left. One corner is clipped.
The Card back - From the New York, New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. This criss-cross pattern is on the back of many casino decks. Note that the back design is double-ended (cards look the same rightside up or upside down), preventing certain cheating methods. If anyone ever asks you to join a poker game using a deck with a single-ended back, politely decline!

Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
My Seasons Platinum Edition cards arrived this past Friday. I also picked up a black uncut sheet (I had the gold edition in white but never could find anyone who would sell me just the black in gold)
Also The deck for the Kickstarter Redraw campaign arrived.
The art is pretty nice but absolutely no work went into the back and the cards are the typical glossy stock you see with a lot of printing companies who don't actually print playing cards.
Was it worth the $15? Meh... if the backs were more interesting it could be a conversation piece, and the tuck case was just a clear plastic box.

Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
Doesn't "tuck" (as in "tuck box") refer only to those boxes which have a flap which you tuck into the box?UtterFool wrote:and the tuck case was just a clear plastic box.[/attachment]
Yes, I am usually disappointed when a deck comes in a clear plastic case/box.
The only time I have ever found a clear plastic case to add anything to a deck was when I bought "The Tape Deck" (sometimes referred to as "Mixed Deck").
The deck's theme is 1980s music. its courts are generic rock singers/musicians. The deck's back is made to look like the label of an audio cassette tape, and the deck comes in a hinged, clear plastic case which is made to look very much like the hinged, clear plastic cases cassette audio tapes used to come in. With the deck in the case, it all looks at first glance to be a cassette tape in its case!
A very clever use of a clear, plastic case!

Added another Jerry's Nugget to the line up. The blue open one is a well used deck, traded with a member here. The red is brand spanky new, got from the Lee Asher sale. I very much want to open it, but also don't...

Johanes:
I like the courts in that deck.
I had not heard of "Tokidoki" until I got that deck.
Evidently, they are similiar to Sanrio, having a line of characters (like Sanrio has "Hello Kitty" characters and such).
Enjoy the deck!
