Your Dream Playing Card Artists/Designers

Unread post by wingedpotato »

Hey all,

Apologize if this has been started somewhere else, but I thought it would be fun to ask: If you could choose any artist or designer to create a deck of playing cards (who has never done so), who would you pick and why?

My pick: Mike Mignola (creator of Hellboy). Mike consistently mixes amazing art with amazing design. I would love to see what he could do with his variation on classic courts and suits.

My dream: A talented Finnish artist who would do a Kalevala themed deck.

I dream of a world where wars are fought only by having dance offs. I also dream that a Finnish playing card designer would exist. The former seems more likely to happend.

My first choice which immediately came to mind would be Alex Kuno because he creates different fantasy worlds with old world style artwork. Somewhat similar to Wylie Beckert's Wicked Kingdom style. I even reached out to him to consider it and offered support/guidance along with the forum here, but no dice.

Oh, I really like Alex's style, too. Especially on that second pic.

Michael Whelan. Hands down. I own a few lithos of his work, and have them proudly displayed. For those of you who don't know his name, he has painted some of the most iconic science fiction and fantasy book covers ever, as well as several iconic album covers.

Yes! I've loved MW my whole life and have the White Dragon framed in my den. Cards by him would be gorgeous.

When my ex-wife and I split up, she got the two White Dragon prints (different poses, really quite awesome), and I got the Foundation's Edge and Dark Tower art. The Dark Tower piece is huge, and it hangs in my bedroom. Truly iconic. Just the idea of his Gunslinger art on the courts... just... wow.

I talked with him once at the World Science Fiction and Fantasy convention (where I bought and he signed those prints and a couple others), and the amount of money he commands for one illustration is, well, probably more than any typical playing card project would pay. But, I wonder how he'd feel about having a designer take work he has already created and revising it to make for a good playing card design. Hmmmmm...

I can dream, can't I?

Yes, yes you can. A Dark Tower deck would be the penultimate—picturing a western and tarot mashup.
