Playing Card Deck of the Month Club?

Unread post by pstaehlin »

Hi Folks!
I'm curious to know if there is a website out there that may offer a playing card deck of the month club. You know, you pay a monthly fee and you get sent to you a new deck or two every month. As a deck collector I think this could be a grand idea. Does this exist yet?

Actually, this did exist for a while. Penguin Magic used to offer their "Card Club," and for $24 a month (or something in that neighborhood; my memory isn't what it used to be, I think), they'd send you four fresh decks a month. It seemed like a decent enough deal to me, often exposing me to decks I wouldn't have tried otherwise and occasionally providing an early sample of decks that weren't otherwise available yet. As they ramped up their own custom deck offerings, those came to be the decks that dominated the Card Club (which was totally fine), but at some point Penguin decided to put the club on hold while they re-evaluated their business model.

I see. Thank you. I think, if done right, it could be a great thing. They could throw in each month a deck that might be more expensive or higher in demand. While other decks that may not be as popular could get out to the population. I'd be willing to try it.

I hope Penguin re-established their club. It was fun and sometimes included some great decks.

An interesting discussion I had not thought about. A quick google search says, "Yes, Penguin Magic does offer a card of the month club." $25 per month for two decks a month for domestic shipping. Quite a bit higher for international shipping.

So, here is the link: http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/5628

Here are the October decks:

Hahahahaha the international shipping is more than the cost of the subscription.

And I would have been very, very annoyed to have paid $45 USD for those two decks. Yeeesh.

That's October of last year, which may have been the last month they sent anything out. Alas.

I have thought about offering something like this in the future. I'm just worried that their would be a lot of complaints that decks are not to peoples taste, etc.

I will look into it more for next year and have a couple ideas of how it could work. Feel free to pass me any ideas, interest or suggestions.

I think Dan and Dave had a monthly deck club a few years back. While they occasionally gave out some decent decks, it was really more of an outlet for them to get rid of excess inventory and it was (as usual) way over-priced. I really don't know how relevant the Buck twins are anymore in the playing card community and not many really cares about their stuff anymore (with the exception of the few fan boys still around).
