I just get whatever I like. I have about 250 decks that I'll keep and have no plan on stopping this wonderful hobby.

In playing cards, I collect great design. If the design could be given a grade (let's use the standard Finnish school grades from 4 to 10), right now at 2017 with all the great decks coming out, I try not to buy the decks that have design "less than grade 10 or 9". If the deck has "grade 8" design, meaning that it is good, well better than most, but nothing mindblowing, it honestly isn't good enough for me anymore, with a grade 8 design, you have to use some kind of gimmick to get my attention. Blow my mind, be amazing, or go home is where I am at with collecting.

So in a way, maybe I don't buy so many decks anymore as I used to because I try to stay away from that grade 8 design nowadays, at least most times. But if the design is grade 9 or 10, I sure as hell want it and like Bikefantic, I don't see myself stopping collecting.

Bottom line here: I rather get fewer decks, maybe more expensive ones, than every single okay looking 10 dollar deck on the market.

I dream of a world where wars are fought only by having dance offs. I also dream that a Finnish playing card designer would exist. The former seems more likely to happend.

I've seen some huge collections around and they look unmanageable to me, those wealthy people who apparently only buy cards in bricks for example lol. I also collect for design, and never in multiple, I can't afford all the decks I like either so my collection will always be limited. I've definitely become fussier about what I'm willing to back/buy over time as my collection has grown and custom card design has flourished on kickstarter etc, a lot of the early decks I backed, which were new and interesting at the time, I simply don't like any more but I'm reluctant to unload them. I'll see what happens, I haven't hit 200 yet but I have a wishlist of about 100, at some point possibly next year I'll build a display case to display my collection with space for 200 decks, and then after that I'll be limited by what I can display and either unload the rest which aren't good enough or store them away, art should be seen.

I've gotten much more picky in the year that I've really been buying cards. I went from getting basically anything that caught my eye to not getting anything that isn't a 'hell yes'. The only exception is when it's really affordable. I don't mind getting something I'm not super excited about if it's priced well.

Actually, I want more custom designed, but cheaper playing cards. I'm all about the cards and couldn't care less about the tuck. It seems like many collectors want the 1000% bling and foil and everything on the tucks. Not me. I would prefer custom/playable $5 decks in a plain white tuck (as long as it's cheap). #pipedream

I agree with this. I also wouldn't mind a well designed custom playable deck with a blinged tuck for $8-$12, either. I think Jackson had the best compromise when he put out the blinged out expensive deck but also made a companion players edition deck with the same cards, but in a plain tuck.

As to your broader question, I don't think we need LESS playing cards. The more decks coming out the better. Now that may mean there's more crap coming out, but I don't mind sifting through that to find the ones that appeal to me.

I need LESS decks but want MORE.

I'm a sucker for interesting design, especially courts, but a good standard court recolored and minimized like (product)RED gets me too. And if it's colored green I'm usually in, damn favorite color.
Move on, nothing to see here.

Exactly!

Personally, I acquire decks that are, in my mind, absolute must-haves - those that I can't resist not having. I know several collectors that go for every bicycle deck that comes out but I don't really see much value or appeal in them. I go for quality over quantity, so I'm a little picky in the decks that I purchase. In fact, I don't always purchase every deck that I like. I have to REALLY REALLY like the deck.

First, I look at the design (both backs, faces, and that of the tuck box) and the printer. I also look at the print run. I don't consider 2,500 decks printed to be very limited. If the print run is 1000 or less, that's a plus and it could be the difference between a nice deck and a must-have for me. There are several factors that dictate which decks I end up buying/backing, but these are my top criteria. Price would be the next thing I look at. Because I go for quality, I can afford to spend more for any particular deck(s).

Yup. There might be a few designers that could follow this model too, but go a step further. In Jackson's case, didn't he limit it to 4 decks at $5 each if you purchased a limited tier?

I'd like to see a designer do something like that, but maybe have a stretch goal, that if they reach a certain amount or all the limited editions tiers sell out, the limitation goes away and even open it up to people who didn't pledge for the limited tiers. This would enable them to make a larger print run and which would reduce the price per deck. This would also give them a chance to reach more customers and grow their list for the next project. It think it would be win-win.

As Tom said above, the real problem is that I need more money... and a bigger house, with more storage and display options for my collection.

But, if LESS is a new deck from Lotrek, then, yes, I suppose I need LESS playing cards, as well.

I don't think we need fewer decks, as it is we can choose between those that we like and those that we love, and then is just a matter of choosing if we need to buy those decks.

Now if you're asking specificly if we need less decks form you, my answer is yes and no.
Yes: taking Grotesk as an example, that design alone originated 9 different "editions", that's way too much. We all know you're a full-time playing cards designer, and thus you need to keep your income, but putting the same design in a different stock or with a different foil color back is not the way to do it IMO. (EDIT: The same can be said for other designers)
No: first because I just love your work (I'm sure you know that), and secondly if what you want to deliver is another novelty or "industry-first", hell then we need them all!!

Lately I've been buying fewer and fewer decks, right now I'm almost only buying from designers I respect and appreciate, this reduced significantly the money I spend on playing cards.

Currently I've backed 136 Kickstarter campaigns within the last 4 years. I'll say about 30% of that are decks I'll keep, the other 70% I've sold or gave away.

With Kickstarter including decks I've bought at other places, 40% I really like/keep. I'm much more selective. When I started, I went crazy buying up everything in amazement of how many different decks there are.

When I don't like something, I pass. No matter who did it, how many were printed or how many (re)colors exist."
