I opened 1 and I have to agree. I'm impressed.

I have to agree, as well. They definitely did their homework.

Wow, I'm almost sad I didn't pick these up. Almost. It's hard for me to support anything JR does after the Legal Tender debacle.

Whether or not he "owns" it I thought he at least came up with it. But that's the hardest part about boycotting JR- his artwork is very good.

Can anyone compare the new "Stud Finish" to the ICO 2016 deck?
The ICO deck has an unnamed finish and quite a soft stock, too. It also doesn't fan really good out of the box, but once broken in, it handles and fans really nice.
Would be interesting if this is the same stock/finish.

So, I don't have the decks with me at the moment, but I opened one each of the "JN Finish" and "Studs Finish." One of them fanned kinda a little clumpy out of the box, and the other one fanned like total, absolute garbage right out of the box. I just don't recall which was which.

Other than that, the decks were fine, I suppose, and I haven't tried to break them in. Do they fan better after a break-in? Do they flourish well despite fanning like smurfing smurf?

As for boycotting these because they have a Jackson-designed back on them... really? These are a "standard" back that JR designed for CARC, and I expect they will use this back again in the future. These decks weren't supposed to be about the design (and, this is true of most CARC decks), they were supposed to be about the finish.

That said, the printing quality and the design are totally fine, as one would expect. But, if these are truly similar to JNs or Studs, I'm sure I'm not getting what's so great about them. I know there's a hell of a lot more to cardistry than just fanning/spreads, and I realize that many decks perform better after a break-in, but out of the box, the two decks that I opened just... bleh.
This space intentionally left blank.

Yes, that comment was extreme and much more directed at his KS work but nonetheless, the Legal Tender campaign and his absence on this site leaves an awful taste in my mouth that permeates to all his other work, deserved or not. But like I said, I'm not boycotting these or any of his other work, I'm just thinking twice before I pledge for/buy his future decks.

The Stud Finish deck fanned like total crap for me right out of the box. I haven't broken in either deck, though, nor have I ever handled real JNuggs so I have nothing to compare the JN Finish to. Between the two, I preferred the JN Finish to the Stud Finish.

I didn't even look at the "Stud" finish, but the "JNugg" one does indeed remind me of the silky smooth yet precise handling of the OG nuggets. Of course as I have said before, I am far from a cardist and my essentially one handed technique leaves a lot to be desired.

Your mileage will vary, as always.

I agree with that comment about the handling. I got these myself and couldn't get them to fan very well, especially the one deck. But it's always good to try out new stocks and finishes, I just don't think these particular ones are going to work out for them.

I don't know what kind of nuggets you've been handling, but I wouldn't classify Jerry's Nuggets as "silky smooth". I don't know how many times I have to say this, but even if you crack open a sealed deck of Jerrys, you have to realize the cards inside are over 45 years old, and for their age they handle remarkably well. But casino grade Bee's are actually silky smooth. Ellusionist UV500 decks are silky smooth. Ohio produced blue-labeled Q1 Tally Ho's are silky smooth. JNs? Just adequately smooth. You just have to accept JNs for what they are: a deck with uniquely stiff, yet thin stock made artificially rare because some French magician bought up almost all of the remaining stock when they were being sold as souvenirs at the Jerry's Nugget gift shop for a buck a deck.

I usually don't pay attention to the BS Bill Kalush spouts on about his "JN-like" decks and usually don't buy his decks. For once, I'd like to hear someone who doesn't have a financial or personal stake in LPCC (like Kalush, Don Boyer, or Lee Asher do), and who is an experienced cardist who's actually handled real JNs, give an unbiased comparison.

As for Studs, there's two versions: The modern Studs that were sold at Walgreens, and the "old" Studs. The modern Studs were basically like Bicycle Riderbacks, nothing remarkable about them. The old Studs were lighter in color, and had a very soft stock. Usually very soft stock equates to low elastic deformation and low durability. What made old Studs unique is that for as soft as their stock was, they were fairly durable and lasted a while. But more importantly, they had decent elastic deformation, or in other words, you could bend them, spring them, snap them, and they returned to their original form. So for cardists who didn't like thick, stiff decks of Bee's or UV500 decks that were difficult to break in, they turned to old Studs because they fanned like typical Air Cushioned USPCC decks but were easier on the hands when manipulating the cards.

Originally, JNs and old Studs were decks primarily sought after by cardists only for their opposite, but unique characteristics (of course the Bucks eventually made JNs relevant for collectors as well). I wonder why Kalush is even messing around trying to recreate these particular decks, since he's never catered to cardists before. Probably marketing to hook the gullible. Plus, from what it sounds like from those who got their decks, these seem to handle like crap anyways, sort of defeats the purpose. . .

I put my extra set for sale and the first time it did not sell but the second time around, I got a decent $71 for the set. Not sure was CARC is planning going forward wit that JN finish but I guess we will find out soon enough

Are there any more decks that have come out in the JN Finish, or first-hand reports about its quality and handling?

Jackson Robinson's Legal Tender deck was printed in China by EPCC in the JN Finish, and reports about it suggest it had a terrible printing quality - start your pleasure read here.
