MUM Article: "Collecting Playing Cards"

Unread post by RSLancastr »

Back in 2001, when my web site "The Bob Lancaster Gallery of Unusual Playing Cards" was a going concern, I was approached by the editors of M-U-M, the magazine of SAM (The Society of American Magicians) and asked to write an article about collecting playing cards for the magazine.

It was interesting, writing for an audience of magicians rather than of collectors. I wrote the piece and, at the editors' request, scanned several playing cards from my collection to be used in the article.

The article ran in their December 2001 issue, which was largely devoted to non-magic uses of playing cards.

I thought perhaps some of the users here at UC might be interested in reading the article, so here are scans of it:

Great stuff!

I'm very interested in good transformation decks and love the satire in the faces.
Thanks for sharing. :)

I think the oldest deck I own is from the 1850s.

A friend of mine with a museum-quality collection has a gorgeous German deck from the 1400s!

Have you seen the topic/thread about the "Transformation 2000" deck I started designing in the 1990s?

Thanks for the post!

I did. Love the idea, but there's something about using photos, or photo-realistic images on a deck of cards that I don't enjoy as much as some.

The 2 of Spades Clock came out great though, even though I'd prefer a drawing, rendering or abstract of that image, instead of a photo-realistic cgi picture of a clock. IMO :|

If anyone wants to know what we're going on about, here's the link to the thread: http://www.unitedcardists.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=372" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Also check out this guys work. His name is Emanuel Jose.
The Curator is my favorite contemporary transformation deck so far. Hopefully coming before the year is out.

Sharpie, thanks for the comments.

I can understand the photorealistic images not being your "thing", but I really think that an entire deck done that way would be impressive.
