Origins Playing Cards KS - Funded!

Unread post by volantangel »

Just saw these cards on Kete Moon, not much information about it . The artist Rick, has drawn inspiration from the modern day cards and the cards from the 16th century to create the court cards you see below. It looks like a stunning deck of cards that is classy, intricate and olden all at the same time.

It looks like a non-USPCC deck. I would like to know who is making them.

Thanks!

Upon closer inspection of the tuckbox, it says prouding created by Rick Davidson, seems like he is an graphics designer/illustrator, and its his first foray into playing cards. These might not get produced, so dont get your panties in a knot just yet guys.

Yeah I did look into that, his website is in fact rickdavidson.com. He specialises in web graphics, I like what he did with these though.

Hi everyone,

This is Rick. Thanks so much for the feedback, it means a lot coming from this group.

To give you a little detail, the project is in it's early stages, but I definitely intend to produce these, most likely through Kickstarter to raise funds. These are early designs but I do want the deck to be of the highest quality, and intend to work with USPCC. I am a designer by trade, but a card lover myself.

The basic concept is to go back to the original 16th century Rouen cards and rework the original art for today's standards, correcting a few errors made in copying over the centuries. I'm currently working with the Archive in France that holds the original art.

As said, the art is in it's early stages and I would be very happy to hear your thoughts and comments as things progress :)

Welcome Rick!

I'm happy about the deck potentially being made, not so happy about the use of kickstarter. Make sure you read up on some of the threads here concerning previous scams and failures, and have everything in order (including planning the entire process) before starting the project and collecting money.

Quite lovely! Definitely pursue it, and if you go the kickstarter route do a TON AND I DO MEAN A LOT of research and planning. Don't half@ss any part of it. If you plan properly and get all the parts of the process lined up, you can and will have a successful project. Your art is beautiful and people will love it.

This is a interesting concept, and the execution looks very good so far. The back design and court cards are beautiful, and I expect the Jokers will be comparably well executed. I'd like to see unique pips and special treatment of the aces, with an especially ornate Ace of Spades to complete the full customization. Thin borders are a must and premium casino-grade Bee stock would be a welcome upgrade to separate this deck from the rest of the hordes of decks coming out.

Thank you all, i really appreciate the comments. I would not have pushed on with this project if interest was low. I hadn't seen the bad feedback re Kickstarter thankyou, tho I had seen previous card projects making promises I thought they could never keep! I will do my research, thanks for the heads up. I do aim to have an independent site up shortly to generate interest.

And thank you for the feedback on the design. Yes I've squeezed the borders, and will be aiming for Bee stock, funding permitting. Some of the court cards in the Rouen's face right as with the pictured Queen. Tough choice but these I will flip to standardise, so there will be some sacrifices on the originals.

It was a hard decision to strip the color from the court cards, but I think this adds a level of elegance to the design. Be interested to hear your thoughts there.

And thankyou Volante for the invite! Appreciated

you do amazing work - and there's nothing wrong with Kickstarter only the people who abuse kickstarter. Don't let anyone scare you from using it.

You asked about colour and I have to say that personally I like the blue line work instead of the black, though perhaps a little darker. An off white background can lend elegance as well as a visual connection to the Rouen origins.

There is a small thing about the clavicles - on your queen with the B necklace her clavicles slant up toward the shoulders, anatomically correct. Your queens of hearts and diamonds have clavicles which slant up towards the middle - down to the shoulders. Looks so odd to me, but no one else has commented so maybe it doesn't matter that much.

Something I have been wanting to bring up about card finishes for a while now: if a beautiful deck is made with the air cushion finish the surfacing always interferes with the graphics to some extent. I would love to see some of the producers of the more artistic decks opt for a smooth finish to best show off the work that has been put into them.

Thanks Dazzle, I like your thoughts. Yes totally agree on the line colour, and the stock, I'm also keen on a smooth finish. And yes a little artistic license on the clavicle, and the anatomy in general.. in an effort to merge the old and new styles. But I have tweaked the detail, thanks for the comment :)

Origins Playing Cards - Production Quality

Unread post by trickz »

I'm just looking at the specs I want these produced at. I do want them at the higher end and aiming for this with USPCC. Let me know if you have an opinion.

Texture - Smooth/Ivory
Finish - Performance
Stock - Bee Casino
Quality - Q1 or Q2

And thanks to admin for the excellent post

These look awesome! I love the little detailing throughout the deck.
The only thing I don't like is how similar the box is to the Artisans box.

Please avoid Q2 at all costs, it has to be Q1. I like that you're considering Bee casino stock, but I would think twice about the smooth/ivory finish (texture and finish is one and the same, by the way). As Dazzle mentioned earlier, a smooth finish may be more conducive to showing off the artwork better, but it comes at a performances/handling cost. Opting for the Air Cushion finish will greatly improve the handling of the cards over a smooth finish.

If the only purpose of this deck is to appeal to collectors, then it doesn't matter what finish you have. But if you want to appeal to flourishers, magicians, card mechanics, and card players in general, then you would be better served with an Air Cushion finish. Personally, I don't think an Air Cushion-type finish detracts that much from the artwork. But a smooth finish definitely affects the handling and durability of the cards in that it clumps quicker.

Trickz - " Tough choice but these I will flip to standardise, so there will be some sacrifices on the originals." awww you let these ppl cloud your thought. The only thing the suit is for is to distinguish the suit at a distance. If you have the squeezers on the top right it does not matter if the suit is on the right or left. Do you think they look at the squeezers or the suit when holding multiple cards? Did you notice they used a lot of green in the Rouen 1567 deck? That might have been a refreshing look today. Will the King of Hearts have an axe? Queen of Hearts a long flower? The Knave of Hearts a sword instead of a leaf?... Did you notice the Knave of clubs has an arrow and the artist signed his name there. Wonder why the Knave of Clubs was important to him.

Texture - Smooth/Ivory / There is no texture
Finish - Performance / Only 2 choices Smooth and Embossed. It seems to be a 25/75 split on favoritism
Stock - Bee Casino / Doable only .08 per deck more
Quality - Q1 or Q2 / Q1 is .50 per deck more. Might want to have that on a stretch goal. Basically, all the casinos get Q1 quality control.
