Wow.. another MAJOR update!

These are just about sold out!... but.....

UPDATE #11 on Kickstarter

"Hey guys, I just got a few hours of sleep and now I'm back to start answering comments and messages I received from the last update. I'll put a few clarifications here to answer the majority of the ones I've seen so far and then we can use this update to add more detail through the comments.
Current Pledge Levels

All of the pledge levels still open are for limited decks. Once those are sold out, that's it. The new levels will be clearly marked with something like "SECOND RUN - RED DECK" so you can tell them apart. These new levels will all be for the second run and will NOT include limited decks.

Some people have asked, "I added some decks after the update, do I get red decks or lose my green decks?". Any decks you purchased before the cutoff will remain limited decks. Any decks you added after the cutoff will be red decks. So let's say you had an Uncut Sheet with 2 decks before and today you want to add two more decks. The first two would be green and the second two would be red.

For those that pledged at the $15 level with two decks, you cannot split those as one green and one red, they will both remain green. If you would like to add a red, we can do that and I'll post more details in a bit about adding red decks to existing pledges.
Dice

If you added money to your pledge but didn't comment, don't change that just yet. I may be getting some extra to use so anyone that already increased their pledge, messaged me, or commented with a number should be able to get the dice they wanted. In the event we don't have enough, the people that commented and messaged me will take priority.

Do not add more money for dice at this time!

We're looking into options to get more dice but we don't want to overcommit so at the moment, all of the dice are accounted for and we can't accept any more pledges for those.
Poker Chips

We're still working on these but I want them really bad for myself. I haven't played poker in forever and now I'm really wanting to with this set after seeing some of Shane's chip designs and how well the cards, card cover, dice, and chips will go together.

We'll have an option to add the sets to current pledge levels so that people don't lose their current limited (green) decks.
Google Hangout Today

We're still doing the hangout today but we're getting started a little late. I'll send an update soon after this one with the links to the hangout.
Limited (Green) vs. Unlimited (Red)

I wanted to highlight the differences between the two versions here.

The limited run will have a green back, the elder sign as the custom seal, and is limited to only 5000. Ever. We will not be printing this deck again.

The unlimited run will have a red back. We'll announce a stretch goal that will put the second most popular seal on it as a custom seal, but for now it has the standard black seal. We will be printing at least 5000 decks for this run, more if we have enough backers.
Tuck boxes

We also have an alternate design for you guys to look at for the tuck boxes. Many disliked the Cthulhu on the back and didn't think it matched. So we've offered another option that would also set the limited apart from the unlimited. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Most of the tiers are sold out! So if you haven't picked up a Version 1 yet.. act fast!

I'm glad I pledged for these before the limited ones were sold out! But the red ones look great too!

I think you are going to find that the wholesale re-sellers will not be selling the Green deck. They will probably be available on Ebay.
At the hangout the other day Erik mentioned that he is getting a lot of emails from wholesale companies trying to purchase the green deck, and that they just don't understand/believe that they actually sold them all out.

Do you guys wonder why this deck is so succesfully and overfunded?
Well, those guys pumping their heart blood into this deck....they know the theme all too well and of course the art speaks for itself.
Everyone who is backing this project is welcome to join the ride and see how this deck come alive during the hangout sessions.
Interactivity is the keyword!
Daily updates ...people love this!
I can see the prices for the green Cthulhu deck on ebay/webstores go nuts.I mean you were only able
To get your hands on these babies during the early kickstarter campaign.
My guess they will go for $20-25 in the beginning.
And i remember those people saying blaa it sucks and they prefer the 4PM design...and now they all want this design as well.Funny...
Anyways i really enjoy this Kickstarter campaign/project and i bet that we will see a lot more from those guys in the future! :)

You are correct the collaboration and community that goes on during the hangouts in phenomenal.
These guys may be first time card designers but they are no flash in the pan company, and they have hinted in their hangouts about decks to come and even showed some preliminary art for the next deck.

This project has shown rather definitively that taking a known theme/pop culture reference and wrapping that into well done deck art is very successful. People certainly like to see things they are familiar with on playing cards, and I bet we'll see more of that in the future. I just hope that like this one and the Grid that folks put in the effort to make the art high quality and not be happy with just any ol' thing slapped together.

Wow... lots of updates on this deck

First things first... This is now the most successful Kickstarter campaign for playing cards !
It is currently sitting at $56,204 (and still have 14 days to go) !!!! The old record was held by the Quicksilver deck @ $50,871.

BUt... they are having some legal issues...

Update #19 form the K/S

"Hey guys,

We were super excited to have all of our cards finished up and submitted by our deadline to make sure you got your cards in December. Shane worked day and night to finish them as many of you witnessed during the Google Hangouts. This morning was supposed to be about some new rewards and stretch goals we had lined up but we had to switch gears abruptly.

Unfortunately, I received an email last night that I'm hoping doesn't trip us up too much. Charlie Krank, the President of Chaosium Inc., sent us the following:

"I do have a point to bring up about your custom playing card deck:

"Call of Cthulhu" is a Chaosium trademark, and is being used on your deck without our permission."

We looked at this before we started the project and the trademark searches only revealed these entries for his company and only one live trademark bearing the name Cthulhu at all, which pretty clearly indicates that it has to do with "rules book and supplements for playing a fantasy roleplaying game." None of which in the least pertains to this project.

http://www.trademarkia.com/call-of-cthu ... 42907.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.trademarkia.com/call-of-cthu ... 30367.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In the next email I received he sent the following:

"On advice of my lawyer, a specialist in intellectual property rights, I have begun gathering additional information on your project. On closer inspection, infringement on our trademark is not the only problem. It appears that you have also copied our copyrighted artwork, and re-worked it for your project. An example is below, showing our original art, created in 1983, and your current effort."

The images that were included actually altered our original image to make it look more like his and seems to make the claim that his company owns the rights to any images that resemble the Elder Sign. The elder sign design Shane created is based on the version described by August Dereleth.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... erleth.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is the example provided by Wikipedia, is ubiquitous, and used in tons of other media.

This was really weird for us because we had just received an email from Charlie on September 20th asking if we would make some decks for him using their custom backs. I sent an email with some options but didn't hear back again until I received these two emails. There wasn't anything about the project that had changed so this completely caught us off guard.

That said, we aren't lawyers so if any of our backers are, or have access to one, well-versed in Intellectual Property law we would be grateful for any help. As you know, it's just Shane and I running this project and we would prefer to not have to spend any funds on trademarks or lawyering up.

We've changed all references to 'Call of Cthulhu' to 'The Call of Cthulhu' as it is the title of an H.P. Lovecraft story and in the public domain.

These changes shouldn't affect our delivery date and we'll keep you apprised of the situation as it unfolds but in the sake of transparency it was something we felt we should share.

It saddens us that we've had to divert our energy to something like this instead of being able to use that time to create more great art and rewards for you guys. Who, by the way, have recently put us over the top to become the highest funded deck ever on Kickstarter!

Thanks again for all of your support.

Update 09:43 CST: I just received an email from our contact at Bicycle stating that Mr. Krank called them yesterday and "stated he was the trademark holder for Call of Cthulhu. He communicated that he hasn’t given permission for use of his artwork for your deck. What we’ll need to move forward is a letter of permission from Charlie Krank that is dated and on his letterhead to be able to move forward with printing your custom deck."

I have already contacted Bicycle regarding this and hope to have it cleared up soon. I am confident that once we have the conversation there won't be any issues moving forward.

Update 09:59 CST: We just spoke with Bicycle and they are continuing to work on our artwork so there won't be any delays once this is resolved.

Update 10:42 CST: Shane and I just got off the phone with Charlie. While we still maintain that we have every right to continue without compensating anyone, we unfortunately are the little guy on this one and it would cost us more in legal fees than we could afford to fight. Instead, we have reached an agreement with Chaosium that will allow us to license their IP so that we can continue moving forward."

Ouch! That's really sh*tty at this stage of the funding.

another update... they have poker chips!

"There will be 5 designs total (see the image below) and you can add these on to any level.

Collector Set - Get 1 of each chip for $10 (no additional shipping)
100 Chips - $95 (25/50/25) + Shipping ($15 USA/$25 International)
300 Chips - $265 (75/150/50/25) + Shipping ($20 USA/$60 International)
500 Chips - $400 (100/200/100/75/25) + Shipping ($20 USA/$60 International)
1000 Chips - $750 (200/400/200/150/50) + Shipping ($25 USA/$110 International)"

They had an update inside the comments about the poker chips.
Although they are not changeing the number offere 100/300/500/1000 the distribution is now up to you.
They found out from their dealer that it doesn't matter so now if you want you can get 100 chips and get 20 of each color if you would like.
This is a nice thing for people who wanted to use these for other thnings than poker. Life counters, money in games, throw at the mikman, etc..

CONGRATZ!
This kickstarter compaign was such a great experience for me as a customer and playing card fan!
I spend $64 dollars for 3 green/3 red decks and 2 art prints shipped to germany.
Talking about bang for the money eh? :-)
I will probably holding those in my hands in very late December 2012/Jan 2013....fingers crossed!

Just for me personally, I am perplexed at the success of this deck. Not to say it's not well done or anything because it most surely is, but it is so specific in it's design and imagery that I found it terribly unappealing. I would be very curious to know the stats on how many backers came from "card sites" vs other people that might just be fans of the theme. They are owed serious respect for running such a masterful campaign but I easily passed this one by with no regrets.

Again, don't get me wrong, it is hugely impressive and well done, but for a "tiny niche within a tiny niche" to have gone so far above the norm is surprising.

I agree. These decks are nice but I do not see the justification for such funding. Good for the producers and it is all good to see others having success but it seems a bit off. I guess my taste does not dictatate the market.

I for one was a huge fan of this deck but can completely see why some may not enjoy it as much. It's imagery certainly is not pretty (although crafted masterfully), although if you were not a fan of this deck (due to the imagery) but like anything by Big Blind than I would be a bit confused.

I think where you are mislead here is in your statement "a tiny niche within a tiny niche".
The reason that this did so well is that the cthulhu mythos is not a tiny niche. Sure we are not talking mainstream horror like Stephen King or the SAW movies.
But if you put the two things this deck embodies next to each other
1. designer cards and collecting
2. Fans of H.P Lovecraft.
I think you would find that the second engulfs the first as far as the size of it's niche.

I think where you may get confused is if you look at playing cards in general.
Sure there probably isn't a person who lives in a first or second world country who couldn't recognize a deck of playing cards.
When you compare it against that it seems minuscule.
But we are talking about designer decks and collecting.
People who are not collectors buy standard decks OR they buy a deck because it depicts something that they have a liking for.
You assumption that the majority of the backing for this deck came from mostly non-card collectors is probably true. Not because of the quality of the design but because the size of the community. The card community is a decent size but it is by no means large. (I think I am getting into a circular argument here and restating things so I will wrap this up)
It is like the Pedale misc. goods deck mentioned above. This deck isn't souring to the heights it is due to the card community. The card community showed only vague interest in the deck when it first was put out. It is a descent deck has a pleasing design but it is nothing ground breaking compared to the Cthulhu deck or even more so the Uusi Bohemia deck. then why is it doing so well. Because (due to a spot on uncrated.com) it got noticed outside of the small card collecting community specifically by the hipster community. The hipster community is much bigger than the HP Lovecraft geek community which is larger than the card collecting community. I think Russel over at CCCC pushed the bounds as far as the card collecting community could go with his Quicksilver deck. Most decks that only go out to the card collecting community will probably stay within the 20,000 - 30,000 range (I would guise) that is probably what the card collector market can hold (less when so many decks are available).

For myself I know that I would have spent just as much on this campaign even if I hadn't been a card collector. For long before I started collecting cards for a living I was a fan of HP Lovecraft.

(I have to say though Paul I am surprised you don't like this deck, I always assumed that the Tendril deck was a slight nod to Cthulhu mythos. Now I am going to have to go back to my first assumption which was Japanese Porn as an inspiration  )

I agree whole heartedly with you that the HP Lovecraft market is WAAAY bigger than the card collecting community and the fact that they are cards makes them more desirable to non collectors as EVERYONE plays cards. It is for this reason that I have decided my next deck will be a Justin Bieber deck.....
