Pretty boring design all around. Not interested at all. I feel like even if I did know Japanese I still wouldn't back it.

While you're not wrong, 0 of the 20+ people I play cards with would be able to play with these, without further instruction.vedus wrote:Fixed your emphasis.TwoPieceFeed wrote:How are these playing cards if I can't play with them..?

You can add me to the list that couldn’t play with them without some training on what the symbols represented. Even then, I would likely make a mistake.

You're not wrong. I do know Japanese and I'm not backing it either. That the design is boring is one thing, but as near as I can tell - and admittedly I have attempted brush calligraphy maybe twice ever - this isn't even good calligraphy. Compare the way 九 (nine) looks on Shodou with the calligraphy examples here:Oscar53955 wrote:Pretty boring design all around. Not interested at all. Even 三 (three) looks a little rough, like the brush control was poor on the last stroke but he didn't bother to redo it. 鬼 (demon, what he's using for the jokers) is obviously typeset and not even in calligraphy at all. But I wasn't mad enough to post until I got to this:

Did you just...?

You didn't.

If you are going to celebrate Japanese culture, why used something that they borrowed from another culture? ‘Kanji’ means Chinese characters in Japanese and is exactly what all of the characters in this deck are.
Also, being Chinese, I actually think that the calligraphy is quite bad and would hope that he did not copy such atrocious calligraphy. Here is an example I pulled off the net of what could be considered beautiful calligraphy.

A deck a day helps keep the addiction at bay!

I love the back design and the tuck, they're really quite pretty, however I don't do cardistry so there's not enough reason for me to back these. Part of that is because I agree that the attractiveness of the calligraphy presented is underwhelming, if it was as pretty as the rest I would certainly be more willing to back.
