Thorns & Roses by Steve Minty

Unread post by vasta41 »

Per latest Hana update, Minty is at it again!
Image
Here's the official sneak peek at the next deck project I'm working on: Thorns & Roses! Can you guess what the theme will be? I won't be releasing this until after I've shipped the Hana Decks out AND I won't launch the project until I'm happy with the deck so hopefully sometime March I don't want to repeat another delay like the Hana deck. On that same note, the campaign will be different this time. I want to try some new things and if that pans out, it will be cool!
So clearly it's a Poison deck  Seriously though, looks great so far!

Steve's Anubis and Osiris decks (especially the gilded duo) are among favorites in my collection. IMO he's a great designer, but for whatever reason his products are usually never enough for me. The Olympus deck(s) renders looked great, but I expected some sort of metallic inks to make the designs pop, and it looked (via reviews) that those weren't produced that way. He chooses really great themes for his decks and his artistry is among the best.

Hana looked good, too, but again I was expecting inks to make them pop and I don't remember them being mentioned throughout the campaign, so I cancelled my pledge. Am I being too picky? Can anyone chime in on this? I'm probably being too picky...

Edit: Just some Minty discussion amongst a new reveal of his. The tuck looks good and the theme sounds good. Just wanted to open some discussion on my weird love/hate relationship with his artwork.

It may be another tuck color with this deck, maybe green.

This deck will be released on April 6th, 2018 at 12PM PST on Kickstarter. The artwork has been completed for both decks and I expect the production time will be relatively quick.

The back design (if that's what it is) looks promising for sure. I like the crossed swords and the trefoils at the sides. Detailed without being busy. He even managed to use a skull motif without it feeling tired, which probably deserves its own award these days.
TwoPieceFeed wrote:Hana looked good, too, but again I was expecting inks to make them pop and I don't remember them being mentioned throughout the campaign, so I cancelled my pledge. Am I being too picky? Can anyone chime in on this? I'm probably being too picky...
De gustibus non disputandum est. The stuff that's a dealbreaker for me might be no problem for you, and vice versa; that's the nature of the hobby. There's no such thing as "too picky," so long as folks recognize that these things are subjective and not dogma (which, for the record, I think you do; I'm speaking very generally).

I was ultimately less satisfied with Hana than I was with Olympus and Anubis/Osiris, for pretty idiosyncratic reasons. I'm hard to please on Japan-themed decks, and though I can sympathize with the motivations Steve had for redoing the lineart in brush I preferred the crisper digital lineart, especially with the digital colors. The bitter cherry on top was that peeling up the seal to open the deck took off the color from the lid of the tuck underneath. A real shame all around, but I can still see how others might love it, and I'm hoping to fall back in love with this next project.

Ha, I see I predicted a green color.

We all agree Steve made some good decks but he hasn't made "that deck" yet.

I don't own Hana yet (although my pair is on its way), but if it looks as good as in pictures, to me it is "that deck". The pictures look STUNNING.

As for this deck, no courts have been shown yet but that back design doesn't really grip me on its own yet. Still I have no doubt this will be a great deck.

I won't try to prejudice you one way or the other on the artwork, beyond what I've said above, but I'm begging you: if you're the type that normally peels up or removes his tuck seals, settle for cutting this one instead. I didn't open my silver Hana, so it may just be a problem with the gold one, or else with my local humidity - not the worst, but not great - but peeling up the seal really did do a number on the tuck.

It's a reference to the Pokémon games. HM01 is a recurring item across the series that teaches a skill called "Cut" to Pokémon when you use it on them.

Seel is the name of a Pokémon which may or may not actually even be able to learn Cut, and I am definitely not going to go look that up on some stupid Pokémon wiki right now because that's how the terrorists win.

Seel does not learn Cut but you can always take them down with it in battle for the grinding of that sweet, sweet xp, slowly using all of those 30 PP's.

Project has gone live. I've updated the original post, accordingly.

Truth be told, I'd been conceptualizing a deck along these lines, but lost touch with my graphic artist when she moved to California. Steve's version is simply fantastic. Well done, Steve!

These look good, though I'm not sold on the back design yet.

One critique concering the center pips on the courts: The clubs should be the same orientation as the hearts and spades, ie the "stalks" of the clovers should be towards each other in the middle, just like the "bottom" on the hearts and spades are towards each other.

I also think that a mere 20 total double EB's with $3 off a double and $5 off a half brick is pretty lame, but that might be partly because I'm salty for not being able to get one...

Don't want to hijack the thread, but is anyone else getting annoyed at all the Kickstarter eMail updates for new projects? I got six for this project alone.

Yes and no. Yes, it is a bit annoying. But I think of it this way. More and more ametuer designers are getting their opportunity to try and make it in this world of cardistry. So, I'm cool with that.

ughhh... the skulls!

Why does (almost) every deck have to have skulls? The back design and the AoS skulls are too much for me.

After about a decade of custom card manufacturing, I'd have thought the market would run out of interest in skull decks by now.

I've arrived recently to this "world". I have a few Calaveras de Azúcar (not exactly skulls) decks and I've recently acquired the Skull & Bones Special Edition and the Phantom edition.

Apart from very specific decks I also think the number of skulls in playing cards is very exaggerated and many times they are included without any need.
But, if there's a market for it...

I think this will be Steve's home run (even better than Anubis/Osiris). Both decks look great and I'm happy to see the Limited Editions tied into the initial campaign. I'm in for all 4.

Man. There's nothing objectively wrong with them - it's beautiful design execution, as expected - but I don't think these are for me. I like the Thorns backs but the bloodied faces just don't appeal to me, and something about the Roses back design doesn't sit well with me either. (I also don't much care for the jokers.)

It's a shame; I like the colors, and it'd be nice to have a green deck that looks good. Steve always does good work on vibrant stock.

I am not sure how I missed this one. I guess I thought I checked it out. Those limited decks are amazing. I am not wild about a September estimated delivery month though. Anyway, I am in for a complete set of 4 decks.
