Strigiformes: A Deck of Owls on Kickstarter

Unread post by Räpylätassu »

Looks pretty good actually. Oh, and IT'S FREAKING OWLS, THEY ARE LIKE THE CUTEST ANIMALS OHMYGODOHMGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGOD... Yes, I really like owls. If you got a problem with that, fight me.

Totally unreleated but I'll just leave this here.

That video is funny!

$10,000 for MPC isn't.
Move on, nothing to see here.

The goal seems excessive, but the artwork is great, and price seems great ($22 for 2 decks shipped).

Am I the only one that can't find the back design? That's my only real concern.

There's a link to all the card artwork:

I guess this one is the back (can't be certain though, but it looks like it):

Ain't half bad really. Of course, whenever I see an owl related item, I can only think of the scene from Lilyhammer

Hey guys! Artist here - glad you like the project and allow me to clear up some thoughts on the printer and goal. I hope this is okay to talk about. My budget is carefully planned out, and going with MPC my costs are:

$1000 for kickstarter fees
$3750 for printing cards and brick boxes + shipping
$2700 for packing and shipping to 300 backers

That totals to about $7500, which leaves $2500 for padding. I do not like doing projects without padding, as if something comes up (price increase, postal fees go up), I have no safety net to fall back on. If I do go with LPCC, the printing + shipping costs go up to about $6000, which leaves little to no safety net. That said, I've considered stretch goals and think I can make LPCC printing happen at a lower stretch goal, so I'll be adjusting the project's stretch goals to reflect that! Again, thanks for all your comments and I hope I've been able to clear some things up on the 'behind the curtain' side.

Also, shimmering is correct - that is the back! Actually, the 4th(!) iteration of the back design, which gave me such a headache.

If you have any more questions, I'll pop around and answer as best I can!

I don't usually editorialize on these posts but I suggest you check out the high res pics. The KS images really don't do them justice. https://imgur.com/a/5Lz94

Thanks, Flash. Should someone merge this with the original topic (since it's a relaunch)?

I loved the first version, but this one looks even better. Will support for sure, but there are too many decks coming out these days...

Agreed. There are also too many owl themed decks for my liking, although the artwork is great here.

I am glad I didn’t miss this one. The artwork is amazing. While it was good on the first try, this is better and with a better price point. Will, thanks for taking this on and collaborating with Renee, who is a talented artist. You both together are going to make it a success this time.

I am in!

My decks just arrived. USPCC printing with custom numbered tuck seal for $7 each and shipping included. That is a nice deal, Will Roya really impresses me as playing card seller and playing card producer.

I received my decks last week and just entered them into P52 (yes, it is a lot of work if you make a complete entry with deck info, courts aces, jokers, etc. But that's the point of a database, isn't it.)

As a low end collector, this is the kind of deck that makes me extremely happy:
Printed at USPCC
Custom everything- courts, aces, number cards, jokers, 2 gaff cards
Extremely intricate courts: in addition to the modern suits, the courts include the older suits of swords, clubs, coins, and cups worked into the illustrations.
Numbered xxxx/2500
2 decks for $16

One could complain that owls are not your thing and the tuck is not blinged out but it is nicely done and I collect cards, not tucks. For me, this a very satisfying deck with tons of features at a very affordable price allowing us common people to buy multiples. I hope to see more decks like this.

I'd like to see the Gentleman Wake review this deck: I'm sure there are a lot of hidden features that he could bring to light- and a chance to find a tame owl to sit on his arm!
