What's still being delivered? Gilded decks, maybe?

I spoke with them last week asking about the gilded decks. Looks like they are almost ready and will ship during the second week of July. An unexpected commitment delayed the gilded decks a little

Ah, OK. I had to look back at my pledge to jog my memory. It's the 2-deck Cyprus case, and the new gilded deck will be coming separately in a few weeks.

They should look great with the swivel case that already has a pair of their gilded decks (Pagan light & dark) and the Blue Bloods Redux in silver. I have the pair of Hotcakes yellow "Hot Decks" in a separate Redwood brick box with things like Grotesque Signature #1 gold and platinum, Requiem & Heretic prototypes and an OG MailChimp, Venexiana Gold #1 deck, amongst others. Uusi just makes some awfully sweet add-in items!

Is anyone planning on cracking open their gilded deck? If you do open it, I was hoping someone can record themselves opening the deck and separating the cards.
Here's my collection of sealed decks only. PM me if interested.

Old school true gilded decks have to be opened and fanned occasionally, or you end up with a golden chunk on a box.

Abiut six weeks after the sizing starts to dry, you need to break the cards apart or they will permanently bond together.

Yeah but due to the price of an uusi gilded deck I doubt too many people will do as they should. However, for the people that are, I just want to see the process as it happens.

I sure hope not. The basic care and feeding of a real gilded deck requires it gets a little attention.

It would be a shame to go to sell one a Knight ear lager and find out that you had a solid lump!

Mike, so basically you are saying that anyone with a Uusi gilded deck should open them up and fan them every once and a while...are there any special techniques/instructions that one should know when handling the decks to fan? I have a couple Uusi gilded decks and definitely don't want them turning into clumps :( I also assume that the other gilded decks (i.e. by USPCC) don't need this treatment since they are not traditionally hand gilded? Thanks!
A deck a day helps keep the addiction at bay!

Actually Mike, gotta make a correction. Here in the comments Uusi says "the longer you wait" the better. I guess you need to give the glue size as much time as possible before cracking them. I think they would have a better response than either of us though since it's their product.

Well, maybe - to a certain point, at which you have a big mess.

I agree that it just needs to be done once, as well. Not repeatedly. The reason is to break the bind created when the sizing shrinks as it dries. I am not the expert on gilding decks, far from it, but I know that mine were already "chunky" about a month after delivered.

They don't ship them for about a month after they are gilt, to allow the sizing to dry. Sizing here is what we tradionally call "varnish", in effect glue. It is the bond between the edges of the deck and the gold (or other metallic leaf).

I talked to Linnea about breaking in their Gilded decks last September and here is her reply to my question:

I asked:
If I kept my decks sealed and for example opened them and tried to fan them after several years will they be stuck together or will they fan without problems? Is there a time I have to break them in by before the gilding sticks together forever or will that never happen?
Her reply:
We are asking everyone to wait three weeks after their decks arrive before breaking them as this ensures the sizing has had a chance to firmly set. After that, you can break it at any time without any problems. All gilded decks "stick" when you first break them as you are breaking a solid surface that has been applied to the deck's edge – in our case that surface is 23KT gold leaf – but once you thumb the cards apart they handle and look beautiful. Because we are using the traditional, 400+ year-old, hand gilding technique no glue is used on these decks – what holds the gold leaf to the prepared deck edges is Linseed Oil. When prepared correctly it acts like glue but is far more flexible and durable. The deck will break the same way if you do so in 3 weeks, 3 months or 10 years.
Hopefully that will clear things up a bit. I am definitely not planing to ever open and fan my UUSI Gilded decks and it is nice to know that if that time will ever come, if not for me but for somebody else, the deck won't be one lump of gilded paper :)

Btw, I have been meaning to ask others who have their gilded decks if your seals keep coming off the tuck? All of my seal are not fully stuck to the tuck and keep coming off :(

Makes sense, although that was not my understanding.

I don't know who the supplier is for a lot of recent "tax stamp" type seals, but they all seem to pop loose after a month or so. That's the case with these, and any others that I have seen lately, except for the ones that are factory applied. My best guess it that they use a glue that tends to adhere to the stamps as opposed to the tuck.
