Re: Bicycle State Playing Cards
I debated about stars on the blue. The luggage will be there for the Kickstarter project but if a lot of people want something different I can make it happen before they go to print. I leave my projects open for suggestions until the end.

I think when the collage is complete it'll look enough like ol' glory without the stars. But I do agree about the luggage. I hate to make even more work for you but this series would be *that* much better if the main focal point of the tucks were something else. But looks awesome so far and I'll be there on Thurs.!

Re: Bicycle State Playing Cards
I agree with the above statements as well. I like the concept. But the strength of the concept gets distracted by the luggage on the tucks. The luggage looks like a design mechanism to combine your collages together. Is there a way to still create your collages without the luggage? That's a lot of brown on a Red White and Blue flag. Why a luggage piece also? The theme is USA rather than road trip. If you can I'd definitely re-do that element. Having this much unanimous feedback is a pretty good market indicator and we're the critical side. If you're able to please this crowd you'll most likely get a whole bunch more people on board.vasta41 wrote:I think when the collage is complete it'll look enough like ol' glory without the stars. I actually like the luggage, but I do think it's way too big though.

I like the tucks with the luggage. It gives it unity. Looks like an interesting project. I can totally see how these would sell at tourist shops in the different states. I think you have an aftermarket winner on all counts.

Re: Bicycle State Playing Cards
Yea, I can definitely see this as a great collectable souvenir sold in tourist shops across the U.S. especially considering how low quality all the decks I see in tourist shops are at them moment. I have quite a few in my collection from when I travel and having an option of a souvenir deck that is actually high quality would be fantastic. That said, not sure I will be backing these as if I do I'll want all 50 and don't have that kinda money to burn at the moment. Maybe I'll back for a few from states I've lived in and collect the rest as I travel in the future assuming they get picked up for more mass in store sales we will see.

Re: Bicycle State Playing Cards
One option I thought of was using the various state license plates instead of luggage. The only drawback is what to use on the plate. The plate for New York could say something like LUV4NY. I just don't know if I have time to update all the designs before launch time.

Re: Bicycle State Playing Cards
Would it be possible to push back the launch time? I think a attractive design would be more important to get more backers. And we all know the first few days of the campaign really matters.rjtomlinson1977 wrote:One option I thought of was using the various state license plates instead of luggage. Re: Bicycle State Playing Cards
I'm working on updating it now. If I can't get it done, I'll push back the launch day. I'll keep you posted. I'm working on New York State first to see how using a license plate looks.

Here's the NY Spade with the license plate instead of the luggage. T-shirts with the spade design will also be available.

I like the license plate version with the "Welcome" sign in front. Nicely done.
Need to make sure that it's not a license plate that is in use!

Re: Bicycle State Playing Cards
That was the main reason I was holding off on using them... BUT I'm just using a LUV4... State Initials. If I need to modify it before printing, I will. I could buy all the custom plates names I use and offer them as part of the kickstarter rewards.rousselle wrote:Need to make sure that it's not a license plate that is in use!
Now that I see the plates, I'm glad I had a chance to change them before the project launched. I think they look much better than the luggage.

Re: Bicycle State Playing Cards
Really like the license plate idea! Always liked looking at differnt state license plates on road trips. Could just say something like NY-52 MA-52 etc. State abbreviation and 52 for 52 cards in a deck.

Loving these.
You got a backer for your Pennsylvania deck, at least. Lived in Levittown , PA for a no. of years and lots of memories got revived after looking at the tuck design.

Sunish

Agree with the rest- plates were a GREAT idea! Not sure about the "LUV4xx" but I guess it's a good option. Can't wait until MA comes out!

Saw this live on kickstarter just now and backed for one! (Cant currently link to the kickstarter as im on mobile)
Had a question, I really liked the custom backs you had in the original post here, but it looks like you went with classic rider backs. While rider backs are a classic I would have preferred the backs you had posted here, what led you to decide against them? Was it just a cost issue?

I'm in for a one deck EB for now. I might add a couple more if my finances improve by the end of campaign. Great job, RJ. Best of luck.

I'm in for one of each.
RJ, do you have outlets lined up to possibly carry these as souvenir decks? (You know, truck stop chains and the like.)

Re: Bicycle State Playing Cards
Not yet... but getting there. I hired two sales-reps but both turned out not to be good a sales. I have a meeting with a third sales rep tomorrow. I hope I can find someone who knows how to sell.rousselle wrote:RJ, do you have outlets lined up to possibly carry these as souvenir decks? (You know, truck stop chains and the like.)
I met with a distribution company this past week which sells to 10,000 locations nationwide but I haven't heard back from them yet. If you or anyone you know is interested... let me know. I offer a nice profit sharing package.
Unfortunately, I'm not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling about the Kickstarter. I might I have to rethink and retool it a little to make it work. I guess I should've done Divide of a Nation first. lol

Re: Bicycle State Playing Cards
Hey RJ,
Don't know if you already thought of it, but how about contacting each State's Office of Tourism (at least the ones for the first campaign) and see if they either can support the project or provide you with people to contact for support

Re: Bicycle State Playing Cards
RJ, I think the biggest problem is this is a big commitment for backers to get this because it will end up costing over $500 for all 50 decks not to even factor in shipping costs. A lot of backers might be turned off by this. I think my earlier suggestion would have worked pretty good, a small set of decks, with each card representing a different state. One could be a landmark deck, another a historical person deck, another could be something else. Then it would only be asking backers to get behind 3 or 4 decks instead of 50.

Re: Bicycle State Playing Cards
I'll need to look into that. That may help a lot. I know with my first edition of the Bradford County History playing cards, I got $1,000 from Bradford County due to their tourism grant.shermjack wrote:Don't know if you already thought of it, but how about contacting each State's Office of Tourism
I agree, maybe I should go with a different approach on the relaunch. Instead of doing 50 decks total, I could break the US into 10 sections or less. For example, the 10 decks I have now could be combined together as the East Coast Edition. Then we could do a New England Edition, Mid-West Edition, etc., etc. The official name for the deck series could be Bicycle American Road Trip with the various editions as the subtitle. the only problem is deciding what elements to use for the spades. I kind of like the state license plates now. loljerichoholic wrote:RJ, I think the biggest problem is this is a big commitment for backers to get this because it will end up costing over $500 for all 50 decks not to even factor in shipping costs.
