Photo editing capability

Unread post by volantangel »

Ok this is a long shot, but as we all know, photo scans don't always come out the way we intend it to be, sometimes its too dark, sometimes too bright, colour came out wrong, etc.

Possible to have a built in photo editing capability during the uploading page? Im not asking for lightroom standards, but perhaps just the basics (exposure, temperature and cropping(maybe cropping might be difficult) ) Im no tech whiz but since lots of app on the phones can have this, would something like this be within PF52's reach?

I think it's unlikely - Paint.net is free and will do that and more before you upload scans...

At first I had same thought as Joe, but then figured if it can simply pass it off to an online service first then maybe worth doing. However, I think your comment about phone apps doing something similar is a warning. If we make it possible to not need proper software on a PC, which is freely available or even built in, and instead make it all part of the service, I fear it will enable people to use their phone to do it. They would take a crappy picture instead of letting others do a quality scan and do a simple crop.

What might be better is a simple guide on how to scan, crop and fix colors, along with recommend software. Any takers?

I don't mind throwing something together - using my crappy Lide canoscan scanner and Paint.net as the example...

Thanks Joe, I imagine the color correction bit (using histograms or whatever) would probably be what is especially needed, but I'm sure many would be helped by the basics. A video would actually be great too and possibly easier for you than typing things up. I actually had planned to do a number of screen recordings for a number of things for the site, but haven't got around to it yet.

You know I've never tried full video demos. I imagine there must be some freeware out there that does screen recordings with annotations and such... I'll have a dig around (but if anyone can give pointers)...

I've used Camtasia for work, but this is supposed to be a really good free 'clone' - http://camstudio.org/

A quick find that might prove useful in the meantime

Using colour curves - old, but very clear and useful.
