[HappyMongrel] My Card Collection! Deck Discussions!

Unread post by Happymongrel »

Hi, my name is Ryan and I live in London, England. I am 16 years old and fell in love with magic, and in particular playing cards and cardistry after going to Las Vegas, and among other things, seeing the legendary Penn and Teller live.

I have also loved casinos, everything about them, and regularly play card games at game nights at the local pub with friends and family.

I started collecting about 6 months ago and I have had to search high and low for certain packs of cards, especially the rare ones. Having purchased packs from all over the globe, including: UK, USA, Canada, Denmark, Spain, Australia & South Africa.

Here are the gems of my collection and my absolute pride and joy. Please do ask any questions or comment on this post as I would love to discuss any pack of cards, whether I own it or not, with anyone.

Enjoy! :D :P

Hiya Ryan :D
Welcome to UC,Its always good to see a fellow Brit come into the fold . Thanks for showing us some of your collection. Those are some mighty cards in your first pic, I see that they are all sealed.
I have also loved casinos, everything about them, and regularly play card games at game nights at the local pub with friends and family.
What Card games do you play ? What Cards do you usually play with ? (I`m Guessing you don`t break out a pack of Gold Arcanes down the pub  )

Do you collect just one pack of each or pairs ? and do you intend to keep all your cards sealed ?
I have only a couple of the packs you have , i got them on e-bay about 9 months ago relatively cheap due to the fact the seller was in need of some quick cash  I`d hate to buy them now at the prices some of them are going for
Have you a favorite amongst your cards, my favorite "Modern cards" are "Arch Angels". Very beautiful. when i first discovered cards and collecting , the arch-angels were the first deck that i bought as i thought the back design was very elegant, simple black and white design and the tuck box was nothing i had seen before (i was used to the standard Waddingtons No1`s)

I look forward to see some more of your collection and reading some of your thoughs in other threads

HI Jase,

Thanks for the warm welcome mate, I have just recently been looking for a forum to discuss collecting cards and this looks great!

Haha you're dead right, the gold arcane aren't being used down the pub haha, they are safely stored at home with the rest of the bad boys!

I do have the archangels and they are definitely up there with my favourite packs, however the one that takes the gold for me has to be the Purple LTD's. Ellusionist has done a remarkable job with these cards and the jokers being manipulated by the string is my favourite joker design. Still I wouldn't whip these out down the pub :D

Unless it's a special occasion, I will simply bring my titanium edition Bicycle rider back's to the party as they are durable, look great and are of course the classic playing cards. In terms of games that I like to play, nothing beats a good old game of Texas Hold 'Em Poker, however I also play cheat, classic rummy and blackjack (which I use the Black Jaqk Cellar's for).

Obviously location wasn't the biggest problem in accumulating my rare cards, these cards cost serious money, however I wasn't prepared to just throw money away.

I spend months getting a feel for the market, keeping a limit on price and bidding steadily until I finally got these cards for the right price. All on eBay. Of course I also had to deal with shipping costs, which were and still are a pain in the backside :D

Some of the deals I got (inc. Shipping):

Propaganda Deck - £10
White LTD - £25
White Centurions (with timber wooden storage chest) - £110
Madison Players - £23
V4 Smoke and Mirrors - £17.50

These were the best deals that I pulled off.

You mentioned that you yourself had some rare packs. Which ones do you have mate?

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Ryan.

Texas Hold`em, Rummy and pontoon are some of the ones we play , we also play Napoleon which is a favorite of mine...I like this as it gives me a chance to use some of my SKAT or Bezique decks instead of taking out all the low numbers from a 52 card deck.

Good to hear your not rushing it.
I got some Fed 52`s from america and the dude put something like $60 on the Slip . Of course customs got hold of it so i had to pay shipping and customs fees on top of that which was more than the Fed`s cost.  i was well miffed that day i can tell you  luckily i`ve only had a few stopped by customs.

Hahahah..you should take a look at "My collection"... Everyone`s collecting habits are very different so my "Rare" and your "Rare" are probably very different.
I guess my "Rarest" deck is a Antique Goodalls deck which has the Ace of Spades with the erect feather...although it`s not rare as in number of decks printed as there were probably 250,000- 500,000 decks with this Ace printed at the time...but it is pretty hard to find nowadays
If my entire collection was burned in a fire , i could replace every Modern deck deck . but probably could not replace that Old one.
I also have a Old Waddingtons from 1922 which has their first court design...I`m very excited about that as the design was only used for about a year before Waddingtons redesigned them....The deck has no tuck or jokers but until i can "Trade Up" having that as an example is (to me) excellent.

So to me a deck costing £ 5 BY Waddingtons is more exciting than a "Gatorback" by Blaine or "Smoke & Mirror"Vol.1 by D&D.... But saying that i do understand the "rarity" of modern decks i just am not bothered by it .if i can get a Rare deck cheap all the better but i dont go out my way for them.
