[LouCipherr] My growing collection (addiction)

Unread post by LouCipherr »

*lights candle and begins to speak*

"Hi, my name is Lou, and I'm a card collecting addict."

Now that we have that out of the way...

I've haven't been collecting cards for too long, but long enough to realize I have a problem.

My interest in collecting cards was really kick-started at the end of 2013. I've always collected decks of cards here and there, but not obsessively and certainly not like I do now. The quick groundswell of custom decks as of late has really driven my passion forward at an alarming rate.

As far as my 'collecting habits' it hard to put into words. Basically, when I see a deck and think, "wow! I love that!" - that's what gets me to pull the trigger. I do look for things like custom courts and really nice back design, but mostly it's whatever catches my eye or imagination. Sometimes I only buy one of each deck, sometimes I buy two. It really depends on if I'm just 'collecting' a particular deck, or if I plan on using a deck. If I think I will end up using a deck for cardistry or magic, I will buy two decks so one can be opened, one can be stored. As far as the 'type' of cards I like most - paper. I'm not a big fan of plastic cards, although they do have their place for certain applications. You'll notice, however, that I have very few plastic coated cards in my collection.

I'm also an amateur photographer, so I will try and post as much card/deck 'porn' as I can. Sometimes the pics here will come from my cell phone, other times (when I have the time) I will break out my Pentax K-x and take some really nice, 'staged' shots.

For those interested, here's my collection on the PCDB: https://playingcarddb.com/mycollection?u=6724

We'll start off with my storage box of goodies just to give you an idea of what's to come...

Here are two small shadow boxes I converted to hold some of my decks. I switch out decks every once in a while in these things, but today, here's what's in them:

This is the "Haunted Casino Ghost Cards" deck I just acquired. I didn't realize when I ordered them that they were plastic coated cards (d'oh!), but that's ok, the custom courts more than made up for it, and it is an interesting deck none the less.

Welcome Lou! We'll pray for your wallet... although it probably won't work. :D

PS Where did you get the displays? And how much?

Did you miss the DIY comment that was there? They are just the typical shadow box retrofit with shelves added. Unless you are interested in that specific frame style I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter.

necromanced - the displays are just shadow boxes I picked up at a craft store called Michaels. I had to purchase some small 1/2" x 1/2" strips of wood to use for the 'shelves' for the cards to sit on, but it wasn't that difficult and makes for a great display. In fact, I'm pretty darn sure I picked up this idea from these very boards.

Jock1971 - thanks man, I took some pictures last night of a few more decks and will be posting them the latter part of this weekend. :)

Sure thing! Standard red or are you feeling adventurous today? ;)

Actually, I will have to take another look at Michaels (and Hobby Lobby where I got mine) because I kind of like how these allow more focus than my 30 deck frames which look more like a mass of decks. This size might work for a smaller side wall or help me set aside the top 12 or perhaps separate my small vintage or transformation sub collections from the rest.

I'll take the red. If I was having fish it would be white.

I was thinking the same. I had considered shadow boxes when I got my plate stands at AC Moore. I just couldn't figure out how to use them.

If you want to build your own I have details here which also includes link to the PCF how to which is from the idea that Sparkz 'sparked'. I'm sure our new devil friend LouCipherr  will add any additional input if it's needed, but it's a pretty simple process (buy shadow box & add shelves, paint as desired). You just have to take your time, measure, think ahead or better yet read up before starting for potential problems. Oh, and measure twice (cut once).

LouCipherr - you said you used 1/2" thick shelves? I think that would allow you to get away with less screws than I had to use, especially since it's a smaller frame. Unexpectedly I actually kind of like how that looks. Although if I build another set I think I'll try and do it so larger decks will fit - I made mine to just barely fit poker size decks, but I now have a few taller and thicker ones which for now just placed on top of the frame.

EDIT:LOL. I waited too long to hit the reply button. Thanks for the link. My Dad was a mechanic and part time cabinet maker on the weekends, I grew up hearing "righty tighty, lefty loosey" and "Measure twice, cut once".

Yes, I picked up some 1/2" square 'scraps' (for lack of a better term) from home depot. Painted them black, and was able to use a single screw on each end to hold the piece in place.

Here's one of my favorite decks. Fulton's October.

As if I'm not close to the bottom of said rabbit hole already! But sure, feel free to give me a shove, I don't mind. :D

I like some skeleton decks, but it depends on the deck. Some catch my eye, some not so much. I really like that Fulton's October deck though. It helps I'm sucker for all things Halloween and the like.

Here's another photo - I really, really like the feel of these Aristocrat decks. Just feels very 'at home' in my hands and they handle very well..

Ah yes, Calaveras. I have been eyeing them for a while now, just haven't pulled the trigger....yet. I'm sure I'll break down and get some soon. Can't pass up a good skeleton deck.

New additions from my wife for Christmas:

And today in the mail, I received these wicked little things:

Max did a fantastic job on the metal deck. I really like them.

:?: Ummmm, yeah. Moving along....

A few more recent additions:

Image

2 x Goat Deco, 2 x Contraband, 2 x Plugged Nickel (Rusted Tin) and a set of Classic Twins.

I really like the Goat Deco decks. The teal is a nice color, and the art deco concept works pretty well with the design.

The Contraband deck is... interesting. The tuck is really nice, the custom courts are different, which is a plus. I do like the courts, but it seems odd to have all them one-eyed. I am really digging the aces.

The Plugged Nickel decks are sweet. Love everything about them... and what can I say, more skeletons!
