[Robert D. Adams]my collection & how I display it
Hey, I'm Robert from Birmingham UK and I've been collecting for about four years. I've given a brief description of my collecting habits in my intro here http://unitedcardists.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=5508" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
The majority of my decks are USPC from the last four years but I've got a handful of English and Vintage decks too. I used to have them, well everywhere, as can be seen in this (very ammeter) video I've just uploaded. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nisUm47 ... e=youtu.be" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I'm really struggling to post pictures so for now I'm limited to those that are on my website but I'll come back and post more.
Just over 12 months ago I moved house and managed to get the collection at the time in one shot:
About the same time someone gave me two huge display cabinets. It wasn't until a few months ago that I finished modifying them but now most of the collection is on shelves or in the drawers below:
...lining the wall on the left:
...there are some better pics of my cards and these cabinets on Instagram...http://instagram.com/deckfinesse" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
But of course what I am really most proud of is my recent little contribution to the community, the display cases I have designed and am using as the launch product for my new company Deck Finesse. Just over two years ago I made some simple cigar box-style display cases. Sold one on ebay and sent one to the Buck twins following their thrilling response on twitter.
I spent a year refining the design and finding a team of craftsmen to make them, then they looked like this:
I nearly went public but happened to be introduced to an amazing branding consultant. We spent another year developing all the branding design, products and packaging. Now they look like this:
So far, these cases are the best way that I've found to make playing cards look really special. What do you think?

Very cool - they look great, and I imagine the idea is scalable. Imagine a cabinet with drawers that fit four of the glass topped case each...

Out of curiosity, are those green tiered inserts in your cases custom made for you or are they sourced from somewhere were other people can buy them (or have you thought have making them available separately)?

Re: [Robert D. Adams]my collection & how I display it
Wow... thank you all for your wonderful comments! And thanks to all those who have connected on social media.
Re: montecarlojoe's comment: I see what you mean and I can picture that in a museum! But I also think one of the reasons these cases work so well is because of the relatively small number of cards!
I think that plastering a whole wall with decks of cards can look quite bad. Too many together perhaps fails to communicate the specialness of any one particular deck and putting them on a wall lined up next to each other completely flattens the 3D object. I think the display case is perfect because it frames them as nicely as any wall mounted display, thereby presenting them like art, but also lets you move around them and if you wish, pick them up and use them!
That's not to say that my cases are the only good display solution! I've seen loads of great homemade displays. Shadow frames with 12 - 25 decks I really like and I quite like the look of those lucite-case things, for certain decks.
Re: markjanderson's comment: The cases are designed and built from scratch. The only off-the-shelf components are the quadrant hinges. The same small team of people cut, glue and varnish the wood, make the inserts and line the boxes all by hand. We experimented with materials for the insert and settled on wood with a thin layer of padding under the leather. This gives a nice slightly padded feel but holds it's shape better than using just foam, say.
Re: volantangel's question: Unfortunately I have come to an agreement with a well-known magic and card retailer which means that I can't make such offers. It is unlikely that anyone will get this first edition at a reduced price. I am also taking pre-orders through my website from Monday at the RRP. The best I can do is promise that if my company is successful enough to keep releasing products, then United Cardists' contribution to spreading the word will eventually be rewarded with such an offer. Genuinely sorry guys!
Thanks again!
p.s. did anyone see that home-made video I linked to? I know it's badly done but not seen anything else like it - perhaps someone here could do a better job of something similar for their collection?

Hi Robert,
I've been registered here for a while, but am not an active poster. I just wanted to say that you have a great product and I'm really excited to get my hands on one (or more) of these.
I have an Architectural Studio in Birmingham and we are expanding into product design and I have been looking for a potential local collaboration partner for a couple of small projects that has a knowledge of playing cards.
If you are at all interested please drop me a message via our website http://www.designsharp.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and I'll get back to you.
Thanks and best of luck with sales.

The display cases are now available for pre-order from my website.http://deckfinesse.co.uk/ We will not produce many more than we have orders for so they will be hard to find afterwards!
Just had a look at your website...I'll be in touch about the collaboration!
