"LUBOCHNYE" designed by V.M. Sveshnikov and printed by The Colour Printing Plant, St Pettersburg in 1985.
A 36 card pack with each card measuring 80mm X 50mm.
In 1981 V.M. Sveshnikoz made sketches for a new pack of cards called Lubochnye. The name of the pack of cards itself tells us that they were based on the Russian popular prints. The special appeal of these cards is that they seem to have come straight from the pages of books on Russian fairy tales. However we can`t say that the illustrations are abundant in symbols of the Russian mythology, these are rather Byzantium archetypal images. Through the stylistics of the images themselves and a mythological bird Sirin on the backs plunge players into the atmosphere of Russian folklore.
All the face cards of this pack are preoccupied with something, only the Kings do nothing because their status presupposes them to do so. They are just idly sitting on the throne. Meanwhile, the Queens have got only one minute to turn their heads and throw a glance at the player. They haven`t got any spare moment because the queen of hearts is carrying a yoke full of watter, the queen of diamonds is making a wreath, the queen of clubs is bustling around the kitchen making Pancakes and the queen of spades has been spinning tows for a long time.
As befits courageous card warriors represented by the jacks, they are occupied with military affairs. They are all on horseback galloping at speed, each carrying a weapon at the ready. It seems the picture is about to start moving and the jacks of hearts and diamonds will stab each other with their spears.
The pip cards of the pack all have everyday and fairy tale illustrations in the background. The ten of hearts shows a hunting winged centaur pulling the bow string and ready to shoot. The ten of diamonds shows a turtledove flying above a tent, the ten of clubs pictures a mythological bird Sirin fluttering its wings and the ten of spades shows us a kitten playing with a clew.
The Lubochnye pack of cards is one of four packs that V.M. Sveshnikov designed for the colour printing factory. The factory did print a very limited edition of this deck with 52 cards and 2 jokers.
Thanks for looking at my cards
