Ukraine

Unread post by WillHart CthulhuWho1 »

With Ukraine being in the news every day right now, I felt it was only fitting that I post these images from the first of three or four Ukrainian decks I'll be posting here to share what I believe are incredible looking decks of cards.

This deck, described as "Ukrainian Playing Cards Deluxe (54)" on the Yevshan (Canadian based Ukrainian store) web site, contains artwork by Vladislav Erko; and I think you'll agree with me that his work is terrific:
This is the opened Tuck Case for the deck.

No, I don't normally tear Tuck Cases apart, but the glue came loose on this deck, so I decided to take advantage of it for sharing with you.

These "Ukrainian Playing Cards Deluxe (54)" are over-sized playing cards when compared to standard poker deck sized cards.

They measure 2.728 inches wide, by 4.350 inches tall; and feel more like a Tarot sized deck.

But that size difference just makes the artwork by Vladislav Erko even more amazing to look at.

If you are interested in owning a deck too, you can find them at:

http://www.yevshan.com/main.asp?cid=1093&pid=28730" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They are item MC193, and sell for $15.95 (US), plus about $6.00 for shipping.

Compare their prices to the $28.49 plus $15.00 shipping on Ebay, and you'll know why I buy from them.

Yevshan, based in Canada, has given me great service, including letting me pay through Paypal using their email address; and they ship all orders to the U.S. (through New York) each Friday. Once shipped, each package has gotten to me in California by Wednesday of the next week.

If there is enough interest in seeing more cards like those above, I also have the beautiful Ukrainian Taras Bulba, Large Format Playing Cards (Erko) deck from Yevshan, and I'll be posting scans of those images too; but you can get a peek at a couple of the cards at:
http://www.yevshan.com/main.asp?cid=1093&pid=27749" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
These are item MC176, and they are a bit more expensive at $23.95, plus shipping; but well worth it for collectors.

And if there is truly enough interest, I'll also post scans of the beautiful Ukrainian Eneida Playing Cards, item MC171 ($13.95) which can be seen at http://www.yevshan.com/main.asp?cid=1093&pid=27656" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
See a sample of the Queens and Kings from this deck at:
http://www.yevshan.com/Preview.asp?iid=MC171L.jpeg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

O.K.
That's all for now from California!

Great posting Will. This is quite different from the highly detailed style used in Erko's other decks - looser and more painterly.

The Eneida deck has already been posted to the Europe thread by Samurai007, but if you have an alternate version with visible differences from the one there then I for one would like to see it.

Samurai also has a Taras Bulba deck up in Europe, but it is a copycat of the first deck rather than the one issued by the restaurant. Do you have the first deck Erko designed for them in 2006, that uses the courts in Samurai's deck, or the more recent one made in 2012 with the more bizarre courts?

Thank you for pointing out Yevshan - it's right here in my own country but I've never used them to find cards.

Here come the beautiful Ukrainian Taras Bulba, Large Format (2.767" X 4.130") Playing Cards deck with more artwork by Vladislav Erko, again from Yevshan in Canada.

These can be found for purchase here: http://www.yevshan.com/main.asp?cid=1093&pid=27749" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

These are item MC176, and they are a bit more expensive at $23.95, plus shipping; but well worth it for collectors.

(Please note that in this deck Jacks are "B" instead of "J," Queens are more of an "A" character than a "Q," and Aces are a "T" rather than an "A.")

Thought I would bump this: This is my favorite card in the "Pekeina Horugva" 2012 There are so many things working so right in this card besides the boobs. Showing nudity in one card says a lot. That's exactly In my 2nd deck the QoC will have a boob. It's in the theme.
Look at the expressions on all the cards. Do you want to see love, hate, crazy, and lazy or the old pompous faces of "Bicycle 808"

The second amazing thing is showing 2 human elements. He did it a couple of times and it works so well. Third, his transitions from one side of the card to the other are spectator. Seeing through the transition like with the pillory above adds another dimension. The chains below work as well. http://www.wopc.co.uk/russia/pekelna-horugva.html

I know one other artist Paul-Émile Bécat who mastered transitions. He liked to use cloth. http://www.wopc.co.uk/france/philibert/casanova.html This guy could literally put a knee by someone's ear and make it work. This is the card that inspired me to make the "Joker 809" The jokers are just but a hint of what the 2nd deck is to be.

I have to disagree about the transitions for the most part. The KoS with the chains is brilliant, but the pillory is not. In fact looking through the holes carefully reveals there is no transition, and the pillory is used to cover that up. The same can be said for most of the cards pictured from the Bilba deck. The only other card that does not use the same covering device is the AoH.
The art is lovely though.

I like two way cards within a theme and in my opinion the transition on the Paul-Émile Bécat cards you picture is VASTLY superior.

Actually this particular deck is Vladislav Erko's "Pekelna Horugva" from 2012 published in Saint Peterburg (Russian, not Ukraine, although the imagery is certainly of Cossacks and similar). J R describes it as "Vlad Erko II". The original 2005 deck with the name "Korchma Taras Bulba" is in the "Soviet Union" section, as it was published for a Ukrainian restaurant in Moscow, also printed in Russia. J R describes it as "Vlad Erko I".
