What exactly are display decks? how are they different from normal decks?

Display decks like the ones from Kings Wild are merely decks that are identical to their main counterpart apart from cheaper and simpler packaging. Tuck boxes are quite expensive when they have all the bells and whistles, so a Display deck makes it easier to enjoy the cards and still keep the exquisite packaging of the main deck in perfect condition.

It also makes it easier for deck designers/producers to make limited runs, since the Display decks doesn't "count" towards the production numbers of the main deck.

It's an odd name since it really means it's a deck you can use while you display the other one, it enables you to display one and use the display deck. Weird, right?
This PCDB Entry is for the Continental Display Deck which was the same cards as the Limited version, but with a plain style tuck case so collectors could feel free to use this deck and keep the actual Limited deck safe.

I would say that it enables you to display the cards, and thus keep the main one sealed ;)

True. The naming convention is backwards logically, but the intent is for it to be a deck that you actually open and either use or show the artwork. I suppose "show deck" makes a bit more sense?
