My CARDISTRY - tips needed "Thank you"

Unread post by Magic_Orthodoxy »

I am left handed, and am having a very slow time getting the Charlier Cut down. I have a few books, watched some videos and everyone does it a little different. My issue is there seems to be a moment where the cards are in "free fall" and anything can happen. My pinky does not seem to reach once the two halves are pushed to their maximum precipice.

VIDEO REMOVED

There are still moments in practice where the cards spill to the ground, or the cards make the little "tee pee" and then stop as if they didn't get enough momentum.

Should I be practicing slow to get the right motion?
Or should I be practicing fast to get more momentum.

Yes, we could all say "do what works best for you" and "just keep practicing you'll get it" or "everyone is different" yadda yadda yadda....

I'd rather hear what I am doing wrong. Or... more constructive, deeply hurtful criticism. (ha ha)

I'll look into this more later tonight, but I would say if you are left-handed you would naturally hold a deck in your right hand and perhaps that is the hand you ought to use initially. I'm right-handed and learned to do it with my left hand. I later learned to do it right-handed, but my left hand is much better.

Are you already proficient with your right hand or have you simply started with your left hand?

As I said, I'll look at your video and then look at my own cut later tonight and I'll let you know if I have any credible suggestions.

I watched your video and let me say you are doing a pretty good job. I expected you to be a lot more tentative, but that was nice. However, I think I do see what you are talking about (the pinky) that could be less than ideal.

I don't have very large hands, so I have to let go of most or all of the upper packet when I do the cut also. The upper packet can rise above the tip of my pinky as well, but just for a small portion of the upper packet.

It seems that when you peform the cut, as you move your two middle fingers slightly to allow the packets to disengage and the upper packet to fall, that your pink is really flattening out or straightening. You start out with it in a goood position, perpindicular to (or 90° to) the plane of your palm. But later in the cut, it often really comes down nearly flat and straight almost in plane with your palm. I think if you can train yourself to keep the pinky pointing up, your Charlier cut will improve.

I noticed that with my left hand, my usual Charliet cut hand, my pinky stays pointing up. With my weaker right hand, I have trouble keeping it pointing in the right direction and it tends to flatten out.

Since you are left-handed, do you deal cards with the deck in your right hand? I would think you do. Generally, whenever you find one-handed or two-handed passes described in books or video, you ought to be doing them with the hand that holds the deck when dealing. Start training that right hand and it will eventually do many sleights with ease. There are a great many card moves that I can only really do with my left hand though I am naturally right-handed.

In any event, I hope my tip helps your Charlier cut. Let me know how it works out.

The pack is in the right hand and I deal cards off with the left. If I swing cut the deck feels stronger in the left hand.

I am working on keeping my pinky UP

+++ UPDATE ++++

Ok, my Charlier cut is coming along, what next? Do I move straight into sybil? Or.... what would be a good natural progression where one skill morphed into the next?

You could try some other one-handed cuts first, like the thumb cut, scissor cut and the revolution.
