Wow that's fantastic. Perhaps this can help reinvigorate beekeeping and the bee population. My dad used to be a beekeeper and we grew up using honey for a lot of stuff. Even as an antiseptic.

I wish I had a couple grand to spare, I'd buy four or more of these. Sadly, I do not and my dreams of becoming a beekeeper will continue to be dreams. :(

I was talking to an apiary I know about this, and he's not really sold on the idea. The whole point of this thing was to be able to harvest a few quarts of honey without "disturbing" the hive while harvesting the honey. Main problem being though that this system doesn't allow for the bees to fully process and cap the honey in combs like they do in a regular stack style beehive. Say what you will about the pea-brained, pain inducing little suckers, but they're actually very intelligent and they know what they're doing when making that heaven sent golden substance. And this is basically making the equivalent of fast food honey. A good beekeeper knows how / when to harvest their hives to maximize honey output and can do it without "disturbing" the bees. Hell the guy I know harvests his in a tshirt and shorts. I don't know if I'd do that, but I'd love to have a few hives if I lived out in the country, but they seem to have an issue with raising bees in suburbia.

But if anything, I just hope that it helps battle colony collapse, that's one of the biggest problems were facing in modern times.

Very cool.

Chach, from the description and what they showed it looked like the bees do actually fill and cap the honey just like in the regular combs. There would be less beeswax to harvest this way, but the claim in the campaign is that the energy and resources of the bees, that usually go into building the combs, just goes into producing honey instead. It's also possible to have a mix of artificial and wax combs, even in the same hive, so if the lack of wax combs is a worry then they can be included.

What I found interesting is that they also advocate backyard hives in the city. Don't know that the sources of nectar would produce good healthy honey.

I live beside an elementary school. Maybe I should give bee keeping a try.
