Exploding Kittens - live on KS

Unread post by flyers3003 »

This isn't a normal playing cards deck so I put it in the General section, but this thing is only about 2 hours old and already over $250K!

Oh, it's the Oatmeal guy. No wonder this blew up so fast.

I'm pretty well gamed out on Kickstarter, still have games I haven't played much yet. Will be coming back to this though, after I figure out exactly how these strategy elements work, seems way too much like a simple card drafting luck game at first glance, but they talk about holding cards and decisions points. The price is a bit high too for a simple card deck based game, but most games are due to play testing needed on top of art work.

Fun art and weird theme though, points for that.

Make that over $300k now, I'm just watching it go up by thousands every minute!!!

Do you have the Gloom cards Nate? They also have fun art, rather Edward Gorey, and a weird theme.

I'm right there with you. This guy must be lacing his cards with pcp or cocain. Are these people serious? this project has to have made more than $1 million in profits even after KS fees, stripe fees, printing, and shipping. Can you imagine, KS is making more than $65000 alone from this.

The oatmeal has over 3 million Facebook fans alone so it takes just a small percentage of them to take this point and beyond.

Exploding Kittens Decks and Card Game

Unread post by WillHart CthulhuWho1 »

I'm owned by several cats, and I do find this game and cards funny, but...

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/el ... ng-kittens

Somebody please tell me how these cards have pulled in nearly $2,000,000.00 from nearly 50,000 pledgers in less than 24 hours!

And they still have 29 days to go!

Jackson Robinson needs to look at this to find out what REALLY sells!

I'm stunned!

The Oatmeal has millions of followers (over 3 million on Facebook alone), that will do it.

Also, we have existing thread here (somebody please merge) - http://unitedcardists.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=6456

It's also priced well. As far as games go, that's not a bad price point for kickstarter. I'm not a backer but I have to say the campaign page cracked me up. Humor is always a good sell. :D

It's already the 12th most funded project in the entire game category (10th excluding video game hardware), and that's after just over a day. This will easily end up being 2nd, with only the Ouya above it, but who knows it could even pass that up! My prediction is this will be a top 5 of all projects to date by the time it's done, quite possibly in the 1-3 slot even.

https://www.kickstarter.com/discover/ad ... ost_funded

<starts creating a viral comic website on the side with grand plans to monetize through a future KickStarter project>

I think this could end up being similar to the obsession with Cards Against Humanity which also started on KickStarter, but ended up being a massive success after the project was done. Especially with the NSFW cards which were just announced as being doubled as an already passed stretch goal.

This game is pure Ameritrash, much in the veins of Gloom, Munchkin and Fluxx as I've previously mentioned. However, it has the replayability as Cards Against Humanity - meaning the first time you play this game with people who have never played it before, it will be their new favorite game. The next time you play it though, everyone will have seen all the cards and the shock value wears off. The art and theme obfuscates the simplicity and dullness of the gameplay.

This game is a card-drawing game. There's as much strategy here as in Fluxx, if you've played it before. If you like Fluxx, you will like this game. If you don't like Fluxx, like me, you will play this once and leave it on your shelf to collect dust. If you want to play a card-drawing game, I would suggest Race for the Galaxy, Onirim, Star Realms, etc. These games are certainly "geekier" but invoke more thoughtful gameplay. The creators of this game claim that there is a lot of strategy here - who do you choose to play the attack card, for example? But really, all it will come down to is which Attack cards are better, which "Kitten" cards are better... and logically, you would pick the "better" card. You would then apply that "better" Attack card to whoever has the least number of cards, because the probability that they have a "Defuse" card is lower than someone who has many cards in their hand. This is not strategy - this is common sense. This is worse than Munchkin, where you can at least choose to screw someone over during someone else's turn - this makes it a tactical game (although very needlessly long). In Exploding Kittens, it doesn't look like you can make any sort of tactical decision - all you make would be the one, single logical choice.

Additionally, this game is 20 big bucks, for 56 cards! You can get Mascarade for less than $20, Coup for $10, Hanabi for $8, Race for the Galaxy (over 100 cards!) for $25, Onirim for $15, Star Realms (over 100 cards!) for less than $15. All of these games take 5 minutes to explain (except for Race for the Galaxy), and none of them have player elimination, which could be a problem for players in many Ameritrash games.

By god, the masses will buy whatever thing has derp-art and cats huh. The art and theme are awesome and fantastic, but they could have been supplemented to better game mechanics, and not outdated Uno-like RNGness. In fact, for $20, I will just buy 2 packs of Uno, or buy 2 decks of whatever's hip and hop playing cards and play Crazy 8s. Big Two has more tactical depth than this. If I want derp art on my cards, I will print my own via PrinterStudio for <$20. In this Kickstarter, you are not paying $20 for the game - you are paying $20 for the theme & art.

I have no problem with the Kickstarter. It brings more people into the Kickstarter board game boom that the playing cards market had. I have a problem with them trying to project the game as though it has strategy. If there is only one single strategy, then you can call it common sense, as well as boring game mechanics. I have no idea what The Oatmeal is, and I have no intention of knowing. This is the tabletop game equivalent of the Fontaine playing cards. //rages

EDIT: I have a lot of free time on my hands to have typed this out on a forum I never frequent anymore. Woopsies :3

I share your sentiment about the game but do we really need 3rd grade flame bait terms such as Ameritrash?

Ameritrash is actually a common term regarding board games, it's practically a genre now and accepted. http://boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/Ameritrash" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Getting close to $3 million now, they posted an update (yeah, I backed this, what of it? ) At least with all these backers they are making the price more justified by including more for the same price, making it more on par with other 2 deck game prices.

Regarding Ameritrash genre and Cards Against Humanity that the NSFW reminds me of, well that and 1KBWC and about a dozen other games....I prefer casual Euro games, but everybody needs a party game that has instant appeal for non-gamers. The replay-ability may or may not be there, but apparently I'm part sheep in this

I enjoy reading some of what The Oatmeal puts out, but I'll stick with Gubs. It's a fun card game a friend made, and as Godzillian pointed out about the other games, takes 5 minutes to explain how to play, requires luck and a lot of strategy, and there's no elimination so you're not sitting around bored as hell if you pulled an exploding cat first card in.

Oh and there's an app for it too. A free app to boot.

Have to admit this is fun to watch. Hairy dragon boobs...   I would pay them $100 to mention my Kickstarter, but what is $100 bucks compared to 3 million.

It seems http://www.admagic.com is making the cards. I guess they need to start dusting the machines off. This is going to be one hell of an order...

They seem like a gothic bunch. I actually like that.
