Re: Comics and Superhero movies
Awesome!
Nice dig at Batman v Superman there too lol (BTW the ultimate edition IS better than the theatrical).
Also - Luke Cage - what did people think? I liked it but felt it tailed off towards the end with the "big bad" seeming a bit silly really. Still I cant wait for Iron Fist and the Defenders!
Not long till Dr Strange either!
What a time to be alive hehe.

Re: Comics and Superhero movies
So what's the concensus on Dr. Strange?
I thought Cumberbatch was good, and the special effects were intriguing, but the script was lacking.
The car crash sequence was a great point up of distracted driving.
I don't like that they gave Strange a girlfriend. He was always working in isolation in the comics, though he often met women in other dimensions. It lost a bit of that romantic loner feel.
Dormamu was a disapointment. I really liked his flaming head figure in the comics. What they did with him in the movie reminded me of early computer graphics animation and was somehow underwhelming.

Re: Comics and Superhero movies
I agree with most of that, Daz.
I didn't mind the girlfriend since it was really only pre-Sorcerer Supreme. And regarding Dormammu, my thinking is that he would only take his flaming head humanoid form if he were to travel to "our" dimension. But I also was somewhat disappointed, I'm just not sure what they could have done differently.
On the whole; good and entertaining movie, could have been done better, and hopefully they will in the future.

Yes, I did enjoy it, Cumberbatch is a good Dr. Strange. I too hope they do better in future.
I missed the colours of Ditko's art, but no movie can be as colourful as a comic.
Pretty sure Dormammu was in that form in his own dimension, where Strange confronted him, but I'm mostly familiar with Ditko's work. His art was so flowing and graceful and surreal. Dormammu may have taken many forms in the later comics? I have the Ditko Dr. Strange omnibus and haven't seen much of what came after he quit, but I'd like to look further.

Re: Comics and Superhero movies
You're definitely more versed in comics than me, so that was just the musings of a comic-newb on my part
But yes, Cumberbatch was a good casting. Will be very interesting to see how involved he (Strange) will be in other Marvel movies and how much he will influence the cinematic universe on the whole.
One thing that annoyed me, was that they had a relic that was something like the staff (not sure what the actual thing was) of the Living Tribunal. I saw youtube videos of people raving about just the inclusion of the name of that entity, but I thought it unfitting for a possession of such a powerful being to end up in human hands and only get a casual off-handed mention.

Re: Comics and Superhero movies
Yep, saw that. Quite a teaser!
The only thing I'm concerned about is that they won't do the Planet Hulk storyline justice, it being in a Thor movie and all. We don't know how and why Hulk ended up there, and if they changed that it'll impact a lot of other things (I'll be sad if we don't see some iteration of World War Hulk at some point).

Well we know he wasn't blasted into space by the illuminati from the comics... and it seems clear that its being sold as a buddy movie and he'll be back with the gang after this movie so I doubt we'll get World War hulk in the same way. (In the original story his anger was driven by the initial betrayal and the the subsequent death of his family on Sakaar having lived there for years).
But I think it could be something they creep towards for Avengers 5.

Very good Personally I like Thor the best out of all the series they have done so far.
@Tom - I agree about the staff of the Living Tribunal. Perhaps this is foreshadowing, with the staff playing a major part in the future?

Bloomin awesome trailer.
Justice League was ok, but the trailer alone for this is in a different league altogether.

Re: Comics and Superhero movies
How about that Infinity War spot during the Super Bowl?
That brief shot of Iron Man flying past Doctor Strange is one of the coolest pieces of cinematography I have ever seen in my whole life.
I wasn't huge on Civil War from a story-telling standpoint, but the Russo brothers ability to direct visuals is ridiculous. Every shot in that TV spot was gorgeous. I think that Infinity War is easily the most anticipated movie of my life. The Force Awakens was up there, and so was Justice League (waiting my whole life for that to come together live-action), but the MCU has built up something very special. I hope that Thanos lives up to the hype because Marvel has a huge villain problem (that might be solved with Doctor Doom and Galactus now available).

Re: Comics and Superhero movies
Anyone else watched Jessica Jones season 2 already? Really enjoyed it, mostly because of Krysten Ritter's splendid performance. And it doesn't hurt that she's uh... freaking gorgeous.
I don't think that it is as good as the 1st season, but still all the time I enjoyed it, didn't have to force myself to watch it, like with Iron Fist for example.

Watching it now. Agreed that it's not as good as S1, I'm hoping it picks up towards the end of the season.
I don't mind exploring her backstory though, that was a good choice for this season.

Re: Comics and Superhero movies
I can't stand any of the Marvel TV shows that I've seen so far. I've tried watching all of them other than Daredevil, The Punisher, and Jessica Jones. They were all terrible. I'm gonna try watching those 3, and I really hope Daredevil is good, because he's a historically good character.
Most of the DC shows are good for at least a little bit. Arrow gets terrible around Season 1 Episode 10. I haven't watched The Flash passed Episode 5 yet. I loved Smallville and love Gotham. I'm gonna have to check into Krypton despite it being a SyFy show...
My older brother hyped-up most of the Marvel shows, so I can't take his opinion seriously. He also hates on Dawn of Justice, despite never seeing the great Ultimate Cut (not perfect - but GREAT - easily better than Civil War).
Edit: Despite having a Joker avatar, I don't 'favor' one brand's movies/shows over the other. I favor DC comics overall, and their characters, but I love both cinematic universes equally. I really hate the idea of DC films mimicking Marvel's film-making process because I love having 2 completely different types of comic book movies to watch. Marvel is overall brighter and funnier, but I love being able to watch dark and serious movies, too. It's great.

I loathe AoS... How many episodes of "the good ones" should I watch? I like to know when the show is supposed to 'pull me in' (reason below).MagikFingerz wrote:AKA the best ones At least of the Netflix shows. A lot of my friends haven't watched Breaking Bad because they can't get passed the first couple episodes. Season 1 pays off in the end. It starts building after Episode 3. It's one of the best shows I have ever seen (Top 5 for me).
If a show can't entice me after a few episodes (3-5), I usually give up, because I really don't want to waste HOURS of my time waiting for something that may never happen. If any of the aforementioned shows take a little longer and end up really great, though, I'd like to know (Daredevil in particular).

Re: Comics and Superhero movies
Iron Fist is terrible. It's slow, chunky, and it's nearly impossible to feel anything for Danny as he passively meanders through the plot.
Defenders is terrible because it's so tonally inconsistent. It's a Daredevil show. They should have just made it a Daredevil show tonally instead of trying to incorporate each show's different tone until the last three episodes before they gave in.
Luke Cage succeeds because of its tone. That is its singular strength, but the show falls apart because of the "action" and an inability to sustain the entire season. Overall, I think that all the Netflix Marvel shows a 3 to 5 episodes more than they need to be.
Jessica Jones S1 is my favourite of the entire group. Followed by Daredevil S1 & 2.
I liked Punisher, but if you trim out all the "core audience" service in the sex and gun worship it is shorter and tighter show that would have been much better off. The Punisher portrayal in Daredevil S2 was far more nuanced than in the actual Punisher show.
I'm halfway through Jessica Jones S2 and I'm on the fence, reserving judgment until the end.

The first Jessica Jones season has the best villain of any of the Marvel Netflix shows, but you don't even get to see him in action until the third or fourth episode, if I recall correctly.TwoPieceFeed wrote:"You're strong, but I could snap my fingers, and you'd all cease to exist." - Thanos

It's totally worth it.
The first season of Daredevil has the second best villain of any of the Marvel Netflix shows, and he, likewise, doesn't show up until a few episodes in. A nice slow burn on that one, and the finale of that season is well handled. Also, I like how the show starts off with you seeing Daredevil still figuring things out. He really has to fight in those early fight scenes. As the season progresses, you notice he becomes a better fighter. I like the way that's handled.
I recommend them both, but they may take a little while to get into, and you are a fussy, picky guy.
