Level of interest for a Tarot deck on kickstarter, perhaps?

Unread post by Mike Ratledge »

Just thinking again, as always: if I were to pursue a certain well-known edition of a Tarot deck for redesign and re-issue using crowd funding on KS, do you think that it would be interesting enough to fund without a playing card deck, or is it something that maybe I should only think about in conjunction with a related deck as we know them? I'm examening the possibility of doing one perhaps by someone that is quite popular amongst us here, but maybe simply a modernized or simply elaboration upon an existing (no longer available) set. Commonly Tarot decks are 78 cards, being 52 + 4 horses + 22 "Major Arcana" cards.

Lorenzo could make a kickass Tarot. I'd be all over that.

I normally don't go for tarot decks, but I'd pledge for one if the design wins me over. Though a playing card deck to go along side it might help bring more people over. Like Shane Tyree's Call of Cthulhu: The Writhing Dark.

I don't know a great deal about tarot, are the base 52 essentially the same 52 we use in standard playing cards?

Alternate dimensions notwithstanding you could do both simultaneously - a "normal" deck on sheet 1 and 2 sets of the tarot extras on a second sheet. Best of both worlds!

Tarot cards are considerably taller than poker size decks I believe. Sometimes even wider.

It could be interresting, but with a low funding goal in order to see it produced event if there is few people on it. If i pledge a Tarot Deck, it would be probably for one or two deck. I don't want to start a new collection ;-)

Strech goal can help upgrade the stock, the finish or add "metallic ink".

Generally they are 3" wide and 4" tall, but I've seen a WIDE variety of sizes, all of which claim to be 'standard Tarot' size. Even 3.5" x 5" and 3 x 5" as well. I've seen them smaller, also, but generally they are going to at least be taller than a poker deck 2.5" x 3.5" size.

Tell me precisely what you want to see, Tom. (Exact and as detailed as possible.). The thing is that I want to make something slick and worthwhile for magic & remember that it is likely 25 cards.

If the artwork is intriguing ill pledge for most anything. There's a lot that can be done with a tarot deck art wise, but not so much on the useful side.

What's that old joke? I played poker one night with a tarot deck and got a full house and four people died.

I've skipped plenty of Tarot in the KS threads so this could be a special case, moreso if there's a standard deck included or at least a nod back to a poker style deck.

Good example of a fanning deck of uber dimensions:

^Pretty much something like that. A simpler version would be the Bicycle Tetra deck. Wouldn't expect the faces to be anything other than tarot faces, but having a back designed for fanning would be pretty awesome.

I have 2 Tarot decks, the Alchemy deck and the Steampunk deck. There are a lot more opportunities for creative art on a tarot deck because of all the additional "face cards", 36 vs 12 in a standard deck. And many decks also have pictures on the "number cards".

Montecarlojoe, besides the size and added cards, tarot also has different suits: cups, wands, pentagrams, and swords.
