I really liked where you were going with the colorful Sci-Fi deck and am bummed that you have put it on the side :( , but also think the new one has potential too...look forward to seeing your ideas! :D

I agree with the rest, the sci fi deck with bright colours was looking prime. And the logo-ish diamond pip fit perfectly. That being said, the new concept look a-okay.

I'm not against fancy pips, but I hate when they are included in the suit index. In my opinion the indices should be plain and legible. Go crazy with the rank pips (is that the right term?) though, fancy is fine for them. Again, that's just me.

I'm with joeblow, make two decks!

I was all for the coloured comic version as well. The new AoC just doesn't do it for me, why the women on the cards?

I agree with you guys. I have gone and created 2 decks with a clearly different vision but the same theme. I believe they will be different enough that both are worth making.

That being said, I'm not sure which I'll push on first... looks like the comic theme is the overall favorite. This is where I was going with the numbered cards for the comic theme. Please tell me what you think of the pip placement... either highlighted in Yellow or in Red. I personally like the closer grouping as it is a little more interesting to me than the wider pip spread of the yellow column... that's where I'm leaning.

Any comments are welcome and appreciated.

The women on the cards have spherical space helmets on like the silhouette in the A of D above... I just turned that layer off somehow.

The yellow placements feel more balanced to me. The large amount of white space sort of references the vastness of space (and the distance between stars in the case of diamonds). That makes me think though, would it be possible to design spades clubs and hearts that somehow also resembles celestial objects.

Hearts- planet with rings? "V" shaped logo? (I feel like that's a popular scifi emblem)

Spades- hmm, maybe this is a dumb idea.

On the topic of women though, personally I don't want to see an all woman deck. I think style of illustration would make it seem like a "oh, women are sexy, look at these 12 sexy space women I put on my cards!" kind of situation. Where if there were some funky 50s spacemen thrown in, it would seem more tasteful to me. Robots for jacks could be cool?

And I hate to say it, but there's just something about a silhouetted, tiny, curvy woman that makes me go "ugh" (in a bad way)... I just feel like it needlessly objectifies their bodies.

sorry for the slight rant

I assure you there will be 4 women in this deck (queens) The rest will be men aliens and robots. The aces will all have a silhouette (unless I change my mind or it just doesn't work) but 2 will be female and 2 will be male.

Not sure what to do with the pips.. I'd like to keep them very close to their familiar shape... and for me the spade and heart are the hardest to get into a space theme... the solution will present itself somehow.

Keep your opinions coming.

The queen of hearts is finally taking shape.... still messing with the colors around her waist... I think the horizontal striping is a bit much but I'm tired as hell.

Thanks @ BlueToy for the stripes between colors suggestion.

How about something like this? (sorry I played with your work a bit! :D ) I "aged" the red and blue a bit to give them a more retro feel. The belt's just a suggestion, you don't have to follow it, but try to add something to break the monotony of the midsection (adding stripes leads to a different kind of monotony).

I like the other style you posted too, though that might work for a totally different deck. I have to agree that the silhouettes don't really add anything to them. I like the visual style you developed for it, though. Kinda like space age Deco. I like the ace of clubs - you made it look like the front view of a three-engine craft. I don't like the "tail" you put in the suits, though. It's off with the Deco feel (looks more like Victorian wrought iron).

I just had a thought. Maybe you could put a belt on her with circular pouches instead? Might make it look more retro-futuristic. I forgot to say that I like how you drew the face here - she has a retro vibe perfect for the cards' theme.

For the spades I imagine a rocket with a planet behind it. The tip and fins of the rocket would form the tip and bottom lobes of the spade by protruding beyond the disc shape of the planet. The stem could be the rocket exhaust. That's a bit involved though, for a pip, so perhaps the rocket itself could be spade shaped - no planet needed.

Don't have an idea for the heart, beyond making it mechanical in some way.

**edit
The rocket is the tip of the spade while the bottom lobes and stem are the exhaust?

Another idea for the aces: a top view of retro-style spacecraft in the shape of each suit. :D

Thanks for all the comments guys. Really helpful. I know the stripes on the Q of H isn't right... just have to wait til it comes to me... a utility belt of some kind might be the way to go.

Here's a bunch of diamonds to give you a feel for the number cards and 2 aces.

I'm also thinking of doing border-less courts???... I'm undecided at this point. Keep those opinions coming.

Personally, I'm liking what you're doing with the diamonds layout.

So are you back to comic book style courts? Don't play with my feelings like that.
If you're back to that style, I really liked the starry background. You could do variations of moon surfaces or alien planets in the background. :)

ooh yeah, starry background was a must for me. Loving that ace of clubs though, it's excellent. I did like the other version of the diamond pip spacing you posted, but the 6 and up of this new version do look excellent. There's just something about the squashed look of 2,3,4,5 that makes me uncomfortable.
AoD is a big improvement from the last one, but I think it could handle a little bit more detail. Maybe some stars like in the stem of the AoC?
Anyways, I'm still stoked about this. Love the WIP updates :D

I am running with the bright comic book look for sure. Sometimes I get bored doing just one deck, so I'll be messing with that other art deco look as a different deck with a different thread... Once I have enough to show.

I hope people like space themed decks because I'll be making 2... but with totally different looks.

Now you are on to something. There have been several attempts at '50's scifi decks but this is the only one that I've seen that comes close. Noice! Two space themed decks? No problem, I'm in.

Thanks everyone so much for your insightful comments and your kind words.

Here are 3 of the 4 aces... still might be tweaked some... but it's where I'm headed with them.

In all of my decks (As with my first deck "Vellichor") I will have a "666 of Clubs"... the only numbered card that is non-uniform. Here are 3 takes on it so far... not really sure what's looking best. I turn to you guys for suggestions.

Love the Aces and though I like the idea of the different 6 of clubs, of the renderings you have provided, the colored versions are a little too busy, imho...my preference being 1 and am fluctuating on whether you need to include the 6 club pips. Just a thought, but how would it look to combine the 3 sixes into a club shape?

Revised 666 of Clubs. I agree the colored versions ones were just too much.

I like the idea of having a 666 clubs card. Good signature card idea. Maybe someone else into angels should do a 700 Clubs card too. Haha the design looks nice. The flames bother me a bit though since they seem too rigid - they kinda look like antlers. I dunno how that's gonna be fixed, though. Maybe add more curves/ripples/waves to the flames?
