The Gentleman Playing Cards from Blackout Brother

Unread post by Alyooola »

Hello all,

We are interested in hearing feedback from the UC regarding a deck by GW artist, Blackout Brother.

His concept is the Art Deco era using his known particular style.

Attached you will find the tuck box design and 3 different court style options. We have already made some small changes to the design but are interested in finding out if this deck would be an interest to collectors.

We appreciate your feedback :)

Thanks!

This looks really great already!

The tuck looks nice - very clean and detailed, but not over the top.

As for the courts, I personally would prefer a background (none seems to have too much white space), so either the first or second option. I like the diamond-shaped background in the first one, but there is more color contrast in the second option making it easier to differentiate the king from the backdrop.

I'm assuming the tuck will have foil? And as for the court cards, I don't think I would mind leaving out metallic inks. Could work out well either either way.

Looks very promising! Show us more as you can. I like that gold-toned in place of red faces.

You didn't ask, but I think you meant to: My personal preference is the first one, but then again, that's just me and everybody sees things differently.

I see quite a few art deco elements, so I may be all over this! Because of that, I really prefer the 2nd one since it includes art deco styles in the background. I would have to see more courts and number cards, to fully judge though. I'm not a big fan of gold on white, but this could work here I think, but the gold suit indicators/pips needs to go because it makes them difficult to actually play with. I'm not sure how it would look if you replaced with regular red/black, but I would suggest you try and make it work. Perhaps red/black with a gold outline?

The tuck looks great and if the back is the card back that too looks pretty good!

I like the stand alone figure, but am obviously in the minority. If it has to have a background design then IMO the second one suits the dimensions of the card better

I think Nate is right that it needs suit colour, but perhaps something as subtle as a line of colour around the suit sign could work? Making the suit sign all black or red may make the gold illustration look washed out.

I'm with Dazzleguts. I also not fond of Gold/white but it works well. The only real negative I see is the one-way aspect of the courts. Maybe two "G"s instead of one?

This. Even if the G's overlap and create a minor one way its much better. Also i think King no. 2 with the rectangular bg works best.

If I had to pick, It would be the 2nd one. It shows a bit more detail and symbolizes a court border. Carful with the Spade on the tuck box. What do you want them to see when they first open the box. Think about it...

Here is a revised version of the court using the second option and black instead of gold :)

I am just now seeing the messages about the one way G. I will relay this to Charles :)

Thanks!!

I love the new backs a ton, and really like the new direction of the court cards! Will the pips remain more traditional throughout the deck?

Merged, I like the darker style of the courts as well, very charming.

Full disclosure...

I thought the theme was gonna be like a theme of a "Gentlemen's Club."

Just a TAD disappointed.

Anyway, Carry on.

I'm really liking the black and gold one but not fully digging the white and red to be honest. I feel that choice of colors doesn't exactly convey the image of high class and elegance you're going for. But that's just me. :)

Keep missing the early birds. $17 a deck to Canada is pushing past my limits except for exceptional projects.
