Re: "Constellation" by Dark Matter KK
Dark Mater - Hmm, white foreground on a black background and black foreground on a white background. Seems a little too black and white. You might want to consider a red or yellow foreground on a white background for the Hearts and Diamonds. It would pop a bit more. This thread should be on "Custom Deck Drafting Board". "New Custom Decks" are decks on Kickstarter or completed decks...

This deck is still evolving...... Courts are still being developed but the marker cards are pretty much locked.

Re: "Constellation" by Dark Matter UPDATED - SEE THE CARDS!!
This one just feels like the neglected middle child in comparison to the Vellichor deck which I received today and really enjoyed. The joker and ace of clubs are ok but the rest of the deck is too minimal...so far

Thanks for letting me know about this... I wasn't aware there was a "drafting board"... I had it moved.sprouts1115 wrote:This thread should be on "Custom Deck Drafting Board". "New Custom Decks" are decks on Kickstarter or completed decks...
I appreciate the comments guys... I have a few other ideas for the marker cards... I might just do them different for each suit.

Re: "Constellation" by Dark Matter UPDATED - SEE THE CARDS!!
There's definitely a shortage of (good) space themed decks. Please don't give up on this one!
I feel the number cards are some kind of corridor that's lighting up as the numbers go up. I think it's pretty cool but I guess it might be a little on the minimal side. Will all the courts be the same alien model just rotated to different angles?

Don't give him hope Eoghann. Jackson said it best "...the art work as been put back in my creative compost pile and will most likely become something else in the future." He has like 8 decks in that pile maybe more.Eoghann wrote:There's definitely a shortage of (good) space themed decks. Please don't give up on this one!

dark matter - This deck is nothing like your first deck. Your first deck was very interesting. I was hoping your second deck would be revolutionary. It falls a bit short.
I see what you're doing with your pips, but you have to distinguish the card at a distance rather quickly to be playable. I bunch of white white lines for a suit won't cut it. The pips need at least to have something like a golden ring around the pips at 5 and 10 to make a pattern for an easy fix.
"Lords of leaping"? Sounds a bit gay in that song... A Christmas song in July? Too soon? Too soon?

The corridor thing in exactly what I am going for.... I have a few other ideas for marker cards, we'll see what happens.... designing is a pliable process for me, just when I think something is a done deal I find of a new approach... sometimes it's better, sometimes not.
As for the Courts, you can basically ignore... I just thought I would post as I move through different iterations so people can see where I started and where I ended up. All Courts will fit with the "constellation" theme.... what does that mean??? I'll be posting shortly.
sprouts1115
For someone that made a 64 card deck for Texas Hold'em, you sure have a lot of predetermined ideas about what a deck has to be. (On a side note::: I LOVE the backs on your Joker 80T deck... in fact I like the whole deck and I'd like to buy one... mainly because it's so different from the norm. I see you still have some decks left... is that correct??)
In no way does a card have to be "distinguishable from a distance" to be playable. It may be a personal preference for you, but to be playable it really only needs to be unmarked in any way.
I will never (never say never) make a deck with standard pips and faces... not because I am stubborn, but because there are thousands of those decks floating around.... I'm not here to compete with Bicycle. I will be designing decks that I like and would want to own... if others like them that's great... if not, I'll print a few for myself and move on.
I can feel it coming together and this deck will develop into something you haven't seen before. Not sure if I'll hit the "revolutionary" mark... but it will be original.

Maybe not in a black and white way, but the more distinguishable cards are from each other, the MORE playable they get. While your number cards may be technically playable in the sense that they're "not unplayable", I think it's safe to say that they could be improved to increase playability without too much alterations.darkmatter wrote: In no way does a card have to be "distinguishable from a distance" to be playable. Of course, the playability to unique design ratio is something every designer needs to evaluate for themselves. But playability is more than just being playable or not.

Re: "Constellation" by Dark Matter UPDATED - SEE THE CARDS!!
darkmatter - I'm glad you have thick skin. I'm that crazy guy who likes 5 court cards and the (T)ower or Ten card. The Tower card is basically a transition from the courts to the pips. Thank-you for researching me that is a good sign, but I have to agree with MagidFingerz. You need to increase playability. Be careful with your symbols. People get easily confused.
Is that your Black Joker index?

Re: "Constellation" by Dark Matter UPDATED - SEE THE CARDS!!
sprouts1115: That is in fact the Joker index... not final... but something like that.
This deck is still in the "pushing stuff around and see what I like" phase. I want it to be a little abstract, a little weird, and 3 colors... black, white and red. To those disappointed so far... I hope in the end it grabs you. Still messing with courts and aces to get something cohesive.

Re: "Constellation" by Dark Matter UPDATED - SEE THE CARDS!!
I was thinking this last night after I posted these last 4 cards. I think the deck I'd like to be making might not be possible on such a small scale as playing cards... I'd hate for them to just be an indistinguishable mess... I may have to rethink my entire concept... and that sucks.volantangel wrote:I dont think the printer can pick up such fine lines?

Re: "Constellation" by Dark Matter UPDATED - SEE THE CARDS!!
I've been following this deck and the new design is a really cool concept, better than the original. Not fond of the spaceship, I like it more abstract.
It's sad it's never going to see the light (didn't see that coming, hum )

Re: "Constellation" by Dark Matter UPDATED - SEE THE CARDS!!
I am going to print 2 decks just for myself of Vellichor gaff cards. When I do I am going to stick a couple Constellation cards in the deck with different line widths to see what is even printable. I'll update when I receive them to see if this deck is dead or alive.
