The "Untitled" Card Project

Unread post by Cellar Window »

Hello!

Yeah I guess I haven't really thought about the title for this personal card project i'm doing. Hopefully I will be able to write it down if it pops to my head or you guys could help me. Anyway onto the preliminary designs!

So basically it's inspired by The Ultimate Deck by Stranger & Stranger. I know it's a bit of a long shot to try to match up with their work but still a shot I really want to make. I really love the look of their deck when I first found out about it and I also wanted to do something similar, something random but will still have subliminal messages. I've made two preliminary card designs thus far and i'm still playing around the design. So I guess YSiHF!

It still looks far off to be completed tho.
I would love to know what you guys think, feel about the idea for this project?
Cheers!
-Harinam

I really like art decks...I'm liking this one more than the historic one you've shown. Is that all your artwork? One thing to be careful with is to make sure the indices and pips don't get lost in the artwork. How are you planning the number cards? Semi transformation?

I do agree with you on that note. I think it's easier for me to design without the constraints of working for someone "not that it's bad tho". As of the moment yes, but I am working on a third one right now. The queen really took a bit of time because it's a stippling. You're right, initially I wanted the red pip on the queen to sort of meld with the artwork but i'll just erase a bit of artwork under it so it would still have that feel. I'll also make custom artworks for the numbered cards as well. Sorry i'm a bit new to these terms. what do you mean by semi transformation? :D

Without delving into too much technicality, a transformation deck typically works with the pips without interrupting their layout. Semi transformation takes a few liberties with the arrangement.

Ohh.. I see, so that's what it's called. I saw the layouts on the stranger & stranger deck and I thought that was pretty cool how they integrated some of the pip layout seamlessly on their design like the 3 of spades and the 10 of diamonds . Yes I think I would mix the conventional and the semi transformation, depends on what would compliment the design more. Thank you so much for that!

Btw here's a wip of the 3rd card.

The Ultimate deck is what got me into playing cards so I'm a huge fan of these types of decks and wish there were more. I really love what I'm seeing so far here and can't wait to see more from you.

Is it all going to be stipple work? That soft result reminds me of the stipple engraved 1818 Ackermann transformation deck, one of my favourite decks. If you can do a whole deck like that I'll definitely be wanting it. That's a lot of work eh?

Here are a few of the Ackermann cards:

@dazzleguts

Oh my god that's a cool looking deck man! Sadly i'm only going to do about 5 to 6 stippled decks. I have a bunch of styles so I really want to incorporate all of those in this deck and stippling will play a major role on it. Basically I want it to look like it was did by a whole bunch of artists. It is still going to be a lot of work tho but i'm actually having fun haha.
This is a great research piece! imma check it out.

Usually different styles in a single deck doesn't go over well, but the exception is often given for a great art collection deck from multiple artists. Interesting that you are doing one yourself using different styles, could be interesting. I would also echo doing something unique with the number cards and go for a semi-transformation style. While I assume you've seen Emmanuel Jose's work, here's a great shot of his last 4 decks in uncut sheet form side by side (although the 4th one isn't yet made yet). Seeing how creative people, especially Emmanuel, can be is really neat for all the ways they make the pips work into the image. I sure hope you do the same. Good luck, looking pretty neat so far!

Hello ecNate, I think i've seen a glance of it somewhere. I will definitely put my back into creating a very seamless looking transformation deck.

Not a big fan of the first card, but a big fan of the second one.

But you should do something with indices even for the art deck. IMHO.

Good luck.

Cellar Window - I like the first card. Since that card is "One-way" your deck is considered an art deck. You can break a lot of rules, but you do need a small border around the cards. The clear border is for cheaters in poker. If you look at Emmanuel's work, he knows where the cut border is. USPCC will not tell you where it is, but Emmanuel has found it.

Also you need to distinguish the indices. Typically, they put a small white border around the indices to make them pop out. Right now it looks like mud...
