Those look much better than the simpler ones. Love the geometric patterns. Maybe make the lines on the Diamond, Club and Heart just a little bit more pronounced.

Thanks for the input guys. Based on your input and Don Boyer's at PCF, I made the middle pips larger. The design is more balanced now. I tried versions with the C,H, and D aces similar to the AoS during the design process, but the club and heart aces didn't work as well because the large pips are not the ideal shape.

I meant the lines on the big pips btw, I feel like they're a tad too vague.

Thanks for the input Tom. I tried the design with solid red and gold in the large suit lines, like the spade's border. It was too prominent, once again the AoC and AoH didn't balance well.

I am thinking about having 2 gaff cards in the deck. The first gaff card would be a double back, I think this would look good as the first card on the uncut sheet. Here are 2 possibilities for the second gaff card, which do you think would be best?

This custom deck is now live on Kickstarter.

Thanks to everyone who commented with critique on this design! You definitely contributed in a serious way to the design process and helped me to create this deck.

I'm late to this discussion, but these have really come a long way for the better. I think the design is pretty solid. My only comment would be not to use gold and silver together. It is kind of a design fopaux to use gold and silver together much like it would be to where a gold ring next to a silver one. When you mix to different metallics they both loose much of their pop from being metallics.

Try making an all gold deck with different values of gold and a silver deck with the same.

Thank you for your advice Jackson. I considered making a separate gold and silver deck, but because I am new to this, I wanted to make this deck project simple with a fairly low Kickstarter goal. The gold and silver in this deck are not used the way metallic inks are typically used though, as a highlight. They are used almost structurally, as primary elements in the borders, etc. It's also difficult to show the metallic effect on screen. The PMS inks that would be used on this design are deeper than colors I can show on screen. The gold ink is close to bronze in color and the silver is a dark cool silver PMS ink. As you know, metallic inks aren't very shiny, they're more of a burnished, satin type of finish. I agree that a light and yellowish gold and a light silver would lack enough contrast, but I think the darker deep inks I have in mind would work. It doesn't look like the deck is going to be funded anyway.

I am a big fan of your work, I like every deck you've designed. You're widely considered to be the best custom card designer for good reason. I especially like the Independence and Civil War decks. I think you understand playing card design better than anybody, and that's saying a lot, because as you know, there are some excellent card designers.

I'm also amazed by the amount of detail you put in your illustrations, while maintaining good contrast and legibility. That's not easy to do. I've been doing pen & ink, and now vector illustration, for many years. I know how hard it is to do illustration at your level.
