Day of the Dead playing cards

Unread post by Eoghann »

So I'm into the habit of contacting artists on bēhance, deviantart and other sites who have designed playing cards, inquiring if they have plans to turn those designs into actual decks. A lot of them never reply, and others have moved on to other things. I stumbled upon Will's site recently and to my surprise he actually replied. He has been working on a Day of the Dead deck and has plans to launch a Kickstarter campaign for it. It's still a WIP but I offered to get the ball rolling with a thread to receive feedback and pointers from our community to ensure a quality deck and a successful campaign.

So here you go guys and gals, first picture is the different designs he went through, and the rest is the design he went with.

Here's part of an email exchange with him where he expresses some questions and concerns:
I plan to have US Card Co. print them as a Bicycle deck.
I am however new to this community and could use some advice.
First: I am considering working the Bicycle logo into the box art. This is however an extra step (it has to be approved by the US Card Co. legal).
Is this a worthwhile step?
Second: aside from uncut sheets and special boxes, what extras does the card collecting community really go for?

This may take some time as I am trying to carve time out of teaching design at CSUS and freelance design. I had wanted to get the campaign launched by this years Day of the Dead, but I doubt I will be able to meet that deadline.

My dad is a hot rod and my mom is an 80s heavy metal album cover.

Seriously though, I've found tons of cool, non skeleton deck designs but never heard back from the artists. :(

I like the first two cards, but I still fear that no matter what it will be difficult to distinguish all the courts from each other without looking at the indices.

Courts are pretty similar to the Muertos decks that were on KS. The queens anyway.

Not to sound like a douche, but haven't there been enough DotD decks?

Apparently not if your "dad is a hot rod and mom is an 80s heavy metal album cover". ;)

That was my thought as well that these and this style have been played out, but I'm not into the skull/skeletons so I'm biased.
