Re: Colonial Unrest advice!
I think I just answered my question. I looked at the info under your name and it says Silver Springs MD... which is near DC. My wife and I celebrated our 13th anniversary in DC back in April. I love the area but my feet hate all the walking.

Silver Spring, MD. 95 south becomes 495, the Capitol Beltway, for awhile before it splits back off. If it's winter and there are no leaves on the trees and you know where to look, look right when you get to exit 28 (White Oak) and you'll see my place!rjtomlinson1977 wrote:Cool. It's a small world after all! Yes, I took 95 south. I'll let you know the next time I go that way. We're planning a Disney trip for January but I think we'll be flying since you can never predict winter weather. What town do you live in?nECr0MaNCeD wrote:PS You drove right through my neck of the woods. If you took 95 south you passed my house by less than 1/2 a mile! If you make it this way again, please let me know. You can make a pit stop here and I would be honored to buy lunch for you and the family.

Oh, yeah... I know the place, white knuckle junction... better known as the Capitol Beltway. A couple of months ago I would say it was the worst driving in the country but after visiting southern California in Feb... I would have to say they have the worst driving out there.nECr0MaNCeD wrote:You forgot the traffic. Worst in the country.

I like the idea of a touch of color, but I think it will be difficult finding something that looks natural. The orange looks too jarring.
And to further derail the topic: I hate Pacific Northwest traffic/drivers enough that I actively miss D.C. traffic.

I'm still looking at ways to add a touch of color. I like the idea of some color too. I just haven't found a good combination yet.ryzellon wrote:I like the idea of a touch of color, but I think it will be difficult finding something that looks natural. The orange looks too jarring.

I haven't been to the Pacific Northwest yet but maybe sometime I'll be able to check out the traffic there.

Not to beat a dead horse but try sepia. To me it signifies age or antiquity like nothing else.
PS the bonus of dealing with DC drivers makes the traffic here the worst. there was once a 3 car collision in the parking lot where I work. How do you do that at 3mph?

So far I think I'm leaning towards sepia also. Once I have time I'll experiment more with that direction. In the next few days I'll be busy shipping out Global Unrest. The fulfillment process can be the craziest part of the project. I would almost consider hiring out a third party company.

Take your time my friend. Just a quick question. Will you have decks to sell once the KS rewards are sent?

Here's an updated back design I was playing with. Since the Founders Deck never came to be I thought I would borrow their color scheme to see how it looked.

Re: Colonial Unrest advice!
Yep, we already beat him up on Facebook, buddy! The "full bleed" phenomenon is definitely something to think about here, especially since Robert wants these decks to be period correct as much as practical. Of course, it just doesn't make sense to take the indices off the decks, or take all of the color out either, but judicious use of a sepia toned color or similar will be astoundingly nice! I'm thinking that both are exactly where he'll end up with these. Robert is a quick learner, and he listens, and he reacts, too.nECr0MaNCeD wrote:I like it. Re: Colonial Unrest advice!
To me this isnt a full bleed design, pushing the design to the borders would cause registration problems. Thinner borders? Definitely. But not full bleed in this case.

Love that color, RJ
I agree. Besides, when the other 2 decks in the series aren't full bleed, I don't think this one should be either.volantangel wrote:To me this isnt a full bleed design, pushing the design to the borders would cause registration problems. Thinner borders? Definitely. But not full bleed in this case.

Re: Colonial Unrest advice!
Works for me, I just thought it would look fine, but since the other 4 decks don't have full bleed, maybe it would look a bit odd, at least inconsistent for the 6-deck series if you had all (or at least any two decks from two different parts of the trilogy series) opened. Robert, don't spend a whole lot of time working on it, I was agreeing with everyone else that it looks better with either A) thinner border or B) full bleed or C) us letting YOU be the artist. I think the version with the white changed to dark or light blue doesn't work as well simply because again, it isn't that way for the rest of the trilogy/series. Maybe it's one time you should tell us to 'mind our own business'? (at least as far as making a major change, as always I am with Tom on the "thinner borders" crusade! Wasted space around the design is just that: it can create a much more cohesive look if you simply minimize that white space...

Re: Colonial Unrest advice!
I'll be playing around with a few options over the next couple of days. Technically Global Unrest was a full bleed. It had the airplane propeller effect spinning off the page. The more I work on the Unrest Series the more I wish I did it like Lord of the Rings (meaning that I did them all together) because I keep thinking back about things I wish I did with Civil Unrest and even Global Unrest. In fact, I can picture doing the Civil Unrest back in a similar color scheme as this blue Colonial Unrest back (but instead red). Oh well, I can't go back in time.

Re: Colonial Unrest advice!
You're confusing "Full Bleed" with full coverage, Robert. Full bleed means that the pattern runs eternally across the backs, like Uusi did with their Pagan decks, and those other I showed as examples on Faceplant look, like Erdnase #216, Bee "diamondback" and others. There are some that come close that aren't really full bleed by definition, but we consider them that anyway, like the "Vanda" Polaris trio, and GW's recent "Occults" decks. I suppose you can argue those either way. The important part is that there are no borders, really - I think that's the definition most people accept, anyway. The Black Book of Cards is another example, as I recall (though not absolutely certain).rjtomlinson1977 wrote:I'll be playing around with a few options over the next couple of days. The USPCC "Streamboat #999", "Army #303" and Navy #303 also were repeating patterns that didn't have any borders at all, amongst many others, but those Bee #92 "diamondbacks" are the ones everybody seems to have in their mind when they use the term.

Well I for one was confusing full bleed with full coverage. Forgive the newbie mistake. I also didn't realize this back was intended for the unrest series, I thought it was just an abstract idea for the future. I gotta get more sleep.

Re: Colonial Unrest advice!
I was confused also about the full bleed vs full coverage. I was playing around with the back to make it more modern but keep portions that reflect Colonial America. For example, the main focal point the interlocking rings represent the original 13 colonies. Of course two of the rings are hidden but you can get the point. It was a symbol to say "We Are One". I think on the back of money there's a sentence in Latin (or some crazy non-english language) that says something along the lines "Out of many, ONE"nECr0MaNCeD wrote:Well I for one was confusing full bleed with full coverage. Re: Colonial Unrest advice!
Here's an updated George Washington card. I'm aiming to do two decks with two totally different courts. The backs will be similar with slight changes... one will be blue (as shown) and the other will be red to compliment the blue. Together it should look like a very American style deck.
As of right now both decks will be Colonial Unrest but with different subtitles.... maybe Fall of an Empire for the first deck and Rise of the Republic for the other deck.
Should the second deck be a 100% American Court opposed to half American and half British like the first one?

Looking really good! I'm glad the second deck will have a different set of courts. If the second deck is Rose of the Republic, I guess it makes sense to have all American courts.

The back is nice and the court is nice but I think they don't go well together since the back is rather bright and the court is sepia-esque. And could you make the borders thinner?
As for the second deck, the more different it is from the first deck (as long as the theme is still the same) the better it is for me.

I was going to say exactly this. The back is very clean while the faces are like a pencil drawing. They definitely fight each other.Yashi wrote:The back is nice and the court is nice but I think they don't go well together since the back is rather bright and the court is sepia-esque. Re: Colonial Unrest advice!
Any suggestions on how to make the faces compliment the backs more or the other way around? I could do a sepia back color as I was thinking about at first.

I really really like the way you did the faces, so if you have to change something, I'd prefer you change the back. That being said, I do like the color of the back, it's a really nice shade of blue.... I don't think the color is the issue, but more the style, like Lotrek said, with the back being clean and the faces having the pencil look. Maybe you can give the back that pencil look, too?
